Valdosta State Football Game Notes - West Alabama

Valdosta State closes out its 2010 regular season as the Blazers head to Livingston, Ala. to play the Tigers of West Alabama on television. VSU enters the game with an 8-1 overall mark and a 6-1 record in GSC play while West Alabama is currently 6-4 overall and 4-3 in league play.

This year’s contest marks the 29th meeting between the two schools, with VSU holding a 27-1 edge in the all-time series. Valdosta State has won 24 straight meetings between the two schools, including the last 11 in Livingston. UWA’s lone victory came on October 19, 1985, when the Tigers claimed a 10-5 win on their home field.

Valdosta State enters the game averaging 319.4 yards of offense while surrendering 287.2 total yards per game. The balanced Blazers are rushing for 142.7 yards per contest while throwing for 176.8. Meanwhile, the defense is surrendering 87.7 yards rushing and 199.6 passing.

Ronnye Nelson leads the VSU offense as he is averaging 37.0 yards rushing and has caught a team-high 25 passes for 233 yards. The senior is coming off his first career 100-yard rushing game and averages 7.8 yards per punt return and 21.8 yards on kickoff returns, an average of 129.3 all-purpose yards. Meanwhile, Larry Dean paces the defense as he leads the GSC with 108 tackles while Stevie Harden has intercepted eight passes and has scored six touchdowns.

West Alabma, which is coming off a 24-23 loss at North Alabama last week, is averaging 30.3 points and 462.4 yards per game on the year while allowing 22.4 points and 377.6 yards per game. The Tigers’ explosive offense passes for more than 319 yards a game.

Deon Williams leads the UWG offense as he runs for 28.1 yards per game while passing for 315.1 per outing. The senior, who began his career at Valdosta State, has passed for 23 touchdowns and run for two more. Meanwhile, Gerald Worsham has caught 76 passes for 1,159 yards and 10 touchdowns. Gabe Poe leads the UWA defense with 91 tackles.

The West Georgia game will be the 329th game in history of Valdosta State football. The Blazers have won 223 contests, lost 101 and tied four times, a winning percentage of .686.

Blazers Claim Share of GSC Title

With its 31-13 victory over West Georgia last weekend, Valdosta State claimed at least a share of the 2010 Gulf South Conference championship. The Blazers now own a 6-1 GSC mark, while Delta State has completed its conference schedule at 6-2. Henderson State and North Alabama both have one more league game and both of those squads are at 5-2 on the season.

The conference championship marks Valdosta State’s first since the 2004 season and the sixth in school history. VSU also won conference titles in 1996, 2000, 2001 and 2002.
