Tallahassee - Florida State junior pitcher Lacey Waldrop and redshirt junior shortstop Maddie O'Brien have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, as announced by the conference office on Monday. This is O’Brien’s second conference honor of the season while Waldrop has won the award seven times in 2014 and 12 times in her career.

“These girls have played so well and competed so hard for us all year and these awards are a reflection of that,” said head coach Lonni Alameda. “But they are also a reflection of the family that surrounds them. We know that Maddie wouldn’t have the numbers she has without the hitters ahead and behind her in the lineup. Lacey is one part of a great pitching staff and couldn’t do what she has done without the defense behind her. We are playing well as a complete team right now.”

Waldrop came through for Florida State last week in the circle as the Seminoles went 5-0 with wins at North Carolina, at No. 6 Florida and at home against Maryland. The Chester, Va., native started three games and pitched in relief of two others and earned a decision in all five.

She finished the week with a 4-0 record, a 1.54 ERA with 21 strikeouts on 22.2 innings pitched and also posted a save. The junior was instrumental in Florida State’s eight-inning 3-2 win in Gainesville over UF on April 2 as she pitched a complete game and tied a career high with 8.0 innings pitched and scattered six hits, allowed only two runs and recorded nine strikeouts.

Waldrop also tossed a complete game victory at North Carolina on March 31, giving up only three hits, one unearned run and posting four strikeouts while retiring 19 of the final 22 batters she faced. Waldrop now has a record of 25-2 and an ERA of 0.70 on the season.

O’Brien recorded a huge week at the plate in five Seminole victories, including a 3-2 road win in eight innings at No. 6 Florida on April 2. The redshirt junior shortstop was key in the FSU victory at UF as she hit a solo home run in the fourth, made an amazing defensive catch to save a run – and the game – in the seventh inning and drove in the winning RBI in the top of the eighth to give FSU its first win in Gainesville since 2003.

The Palm Harbor, Fla., native finished the week with four multi-hit games and batted .571 (8-for-14) with two doubles, three home runs, five walks, five RBI and six runs scored. She posted a slugging percentage of 1.357 and an on-base percentage of .684 as the Seminoles extended their ACC winning streak to 12 games and their overall win streak to 17 consecutive games.

O’Brien now owns the FSU records for single-season home runs (16) as well as the career HR mark (34) and her 63 RBI are more than any FSU player has ever had in a season.

The No. 8 Seminoles welcome the No. 6 Florida Gators to Tallahassee on Wed., April 9 at 6:00 p.m. It is the final game of the home-and-home regular season series between the two teams and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
