Weaver’s One-Hit Shutout Leads FSU Past BC

KINGSTON, R.I. – Luke Weaver’s complete game, one-hit shutout paced top-ranked Florida State (20-5, 8-2) to a 6-0 victory over Boston College (7-16, 1-9) in game one of a doubleheader Friday afternoon on Bill Beck Field on the campus of the University of Rhode Island.

On a very cold afternoon with winds gusts up towards 25 mph throughout the duration of the game, Weaver kept the Eagles offense off-balanced en route to tossing his first career complete game and third by a Seminole pitcher this year.

“A great performance by Luke Weaver,” Florida State head coach Mike Martin said. “I was very impressed with the way he didn’t complain about the conditions. He went out there and was very professional in his approach. It was a good win for this baseball team.”

Weaver went 9.0 strong innings allowing just one hit while walking two and finishing with four strikeouts. After issuing a one out walk in the third, the junior right hander retired 12 straight batters before giving up his second walk with two outs in the seventh to Tom Bourdon. The Eagles first and only hit of the game came on the very next pitch in the seventh as Chris Shaw dropped a bloop single to left. Weaver responded by getting Joe Cronin swinging on strikes to retire the side.

“It’s something that I have always strived for,” said Weaver on throwing his first career complete game. “Leibrandt and Compton got theirs out of the way this year and I felt left out. But I went out there today just trying to be productive and get groundballs.

“It was one of those games where I’m not going to strike a lot of people out; its tough conditions; it’s cold, its windy and I just had to battle through the whole game.”

The DeLand, Fla., native closed out the game setting down the final seven batters on three strikeouts, a trio of groundouts and a fly out.

“I located today,” added Weaver. “At Clemson, I was attacking the strike zone but left a lot of balls over the plate. Today, it was more of the same except I was locating better. I was getting balls off the plate on two strikes and making them chase. I was throwing the off speed for strikes and getting them to chase that as well. I was just really trying to control myself out there today and not let the factors get the better of me.”

John Nogowski and Casey Smit paced the Seminole offense with two hits apiece, while Jose Brizuela, Brett Knief, Hank Truluck, Danny De La Calle and Smit all drove in a run in the win.

BC starter John Gorman suffered the loss (2-4) as he lasted just three innings on Friday allowing four runs on four hits as he walked four and struck out four.

Florida State struck first in game one scoring two runs in both the second and third innings. Smit and De La Calle registered RBI singles in the second, while Brizuela picked up a run scoring double in the third. He would later score the fourth run of the game on a wild pitch from Gorman.

“We know that Boston College is a lot better than their record indicates,” added Martin. “We got some key hits early on and that was no question a big part of the game. To get a couple runs in the second and third off of Gorman was big. He is one of their best pitchers. On days like today, you got to take advantage of every opportunity and we did that today.”

The Seminoles added to their lead in the sixth plating a run to make the score 5-0. Nogowski led off the inning with a double down the line in right off Mike King, who had retired six straight batters upon entering the game in the top of the fourth. He moved to third on a groundout to second by Brizuela and scored on a fielder’s choice groundball to third off the bat of Knief. BC third baseman Johnny Adams made a nice diving play to get to the ball but could not get up in time to throw out Nogowski at the plate.

Florida State pushed its advantage to 6-0 on an RBI groundout by pinch hitter Hank Truluck. Knief drew a one out walk off Tyler Hinchliffe and moved to third on a single through the right side by Smit. Knief would score a batter later as Truluck grounded out to third.
