Tallahassee, FL - With the 2011 season just a week away, the Florida State women’s tennis team will kick-off the first match as FSU’s highest ever preseason ranked team at No. 14 on the ITA Division I Rankings. Leading the way for the Seminoles is sophomore Noemie Scharle at No. 18 and senior Katie Rybakova checking in at No. 42. Senior Federica Suess and sophomore Francesca Segarelli came in as the nation’s No. 43 ranked doubles tandem.
“We are really excited to have held onto our ranking (No. 14) going into the preseason,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde. “We feel pretty good about where we sit right now, but there is still a ton of tennis ahead of us. We still have a lot of work ahead of us and still have a lot to prove. We are definitely coming off a tremendous year last year making it to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in team history, breaking all kinds of records and we just want to continue on that path. It’s time for us to really put our heads down and do a lot of hard core training and with the new addition of Ruth (Seaborne) in the lineup here in January we will continue to focus on our team, our unit, our cohesion and all the things that that make a big difference as we get into the thick of the season.”
The Atlantic Coast Conference will continue to be one the strongest conferences in the nation this season as it holds five of the top 15 nationally-ranked schools on the list, seven in the top 25 and nine schools in the top 52. No. 6 North Carolina leads the way with No. 7 Duke, No. 11 Clemson, No. 12 Miami, No. 14 Florida State, No. 16 Georgia Tech and No. 24 Virginia taking the other top 25 spots.
With the gained experience by the current players as well as the additions of freshman Seaborne and Manon Veldman, Hyde looks to lead the ‘Noles, alongside associate head coach Oliver Foreman, to ever higher levels of excellence.
“I think each year our goal has been to be to be better than we were the year before and I think the experience that was gained through last year’s season, with the freshman from last year going through what they went through and being part of history and being part of the program at a new level, that is only going to better equip us for this season as well.”
