Georgia-Florida Weekend Opens With Swimming And Diving Meet

Posted: 10/28/2010 - The Georgia swimming and diving teams will open the home portion of their 2010-11 schedule on Friday when they entertain Florida — one day before their football counterparts renew their rivalry in Jacksonville. Friday’s competition will begin at 11 a.m. at Gabrielsen Natatorium inside the Ramsey Center. Admission is free. “This will be an exciting meet,” Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle said. “Both teams will have to earn every point. This is the kind of meet where you need people to really step up. We need some folks in fifth to get fourth and some seconds to get firsts. We are counting on everybody up and down the lineup to make a difference.” “Everybody is excited about the football game, but we’re excited also about the meet,” senior Chelsea Nauta said. “We’ve got a great home dual-meet record that we’re ready to defend. But Florida is the defending national champion, so it’s not going to be an easy meet.” The Lady Bulldogs have won 71 straight at Gabrielsen Natatorium and is 72-1 all-time at home. The only loss came to Florida during the 1995-96 campaign. The Lady Bulldogs kicked off their season last Friday with a 168-132 victory over North Carolina. Nauta and Melanie Margalis were double winners as Nauta claimed the 1,000 freestyle in 9:54.41 and took the 200 butterfly in 2:00.69 while Margalis won the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.53 and the 200 individual medley in 1:59.14. Allison Schmitt 200 freestyle, 1:47.43), Hannah Moore (1-meter springboard, 297.30 points) and the 400 freestyle relay of Megan Romano, Morgan Scroggy, Nauta and Schmitt (3:20.94) also won. The Bulldogs opened by dropping a 183-117 decision to North Carolina. Mark Dylla won the 200 butterfly in 1:48.24 and the 200 backstroke in 1:50.89, while Bill Cregar took the 200 breaststroke in 2:01.60 and the 200 individual medley in 1:49.76. Michael Arnold touched in 20.50 to win the 50 freestyle. Jameson Hill claimed the 200 freestyle in 1:38.77 in his Georgia debut. Earlier this week, Hill was chosen as the SEC Male Freshman of the Week. Florida also split its season-opening meets with Virginia.
