TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State University will retire the jersey (#27) of former Seminole and NFL star cornerback Terrell Buckley at its football game against Louisiana-Monroe on September 3.

In 1991, Florida State traveled to Michigan to take on Desmond Howard and the Wolverines in a game that would come to represent the quintessential FSU game of the Dynasty Era. In one of the most memorable plays in Seminole history, Buckley stepped in front of Howard to pick off a pass on the second play of the game and raced to the end zone and the play ignited a 51-31 Seminole win.

Buckley owned most of FSU’s interception records following his outstanding three-year career from 1989-91 including the single season mark with 12 interceptions as a junior. He became FSU’s second Jim Thorpe Trophy winner following that 1991 season and finished seventh in the Heisman Trophy balloting. He totaled 21 career interceptions as a Seminole. Buckley was also one of FSU’s all-time great punt returners and he scored seven career touchdowns, four on interceptions and three on punts. He also played two years for the FSU baseball team and ran track for the Seminoles.

Buckley was the fifth player taken overall in the 1992 NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers. He went on to an outstanding 15-year NFL career in which he totaled 50 career interceptions. He had a least one interception in 13 consecutive NFL season. In addition to Green Bay, he also played for Miami, Denver, New England and both the Jets and Giants. He won a Super Bowl ring with the Patriots in 2002 and led the NFL in interception return yardage in 1996.

Florida State, which began retiring jersey’s rather than taking numbers out of circulation in the mid 1990s, will honor him on September 3. He will join Fred Biletnikoff (WR, 1962-64), Ron Sellers (WR, 1966-68), Ron Simmons (NG, 1977-80), Deion Sanders (CB, 1985-88), Charlie Ward (QB, 1989-93), Warrick Dunn (RB, 1993-96), Chris Weinke (QB, 1997-2000) and Derrick Brooks (LB, 1991-94) as the only FSU football players to have their number/jersey retired.
