Tallahassee, FL - It was a flashback of 1983. Julius Erving. Andrew Toney. Clemon Johnson. It's about 30 years after the former Philadelphia 76ers won an NBA championship.
They're together again for FAMU's Celebrity Golf Tournament.
"I'm overjoyed," said Johnson, FAMU's men's basketball coach. "Basically overjoyed that I got my former teammates here and like I said, looking forward to the opportunity spending some time with them and talk about the old days."
"Everytime I go on the course I always consider it practice unless I'm in a tournament," Erving said. "So, now we're in a tournament, so we gotta see the results of that practice...and I have been practicing."
But Erving had some steep competition. He was up against guys like Maurice Allen, the captain of the U.S. long driving team.
"When they saw, everybody's like, 'Oh, no. Not him,' Allen said. "But, I mean, it's good fun. Definitely to help support the program and giving back to the school."
The giving back is the most important thing to Johnson, who didn't take a single cut on the course.
"You don't want me on the golf course," Johnson laughed.
But you will see him on the sideline hopefully winning a MEAC title all with a little help from his friends.
"This is the moment that I like to share," Johnson said. "The opportunity to bring back individuals that everybody knows about. Share their stories, my stories, our stories with the community and just sit back and have some fun."
