FAMU’S Angel Signs Stellar Inaugural Class for 2011-12

Tallahassee, FL -- August 4, 2011 --

Florida A&M Head Men’s Track and Field Coach Wayne Angel announced the signing of ten student-athletes to grant-aid today for the 2011-2012 season.

“I am very pleased and excited about the potential and possibilities of these student athletes,” said second year coach Angel. "They are tough, talented and have a no-nonsense approach to work, which will be necessary in helping FAMU in re-establishing its presence in the MEAC.

“We have added depth and talent to our sprint and hurdles groups, our 4x100 and 4x400 relays will bring a lot of excitement to the hill and hopefully ignite a fire in the hearts and minds of our students and alumni to come out and support us,” Angel said.

Here are the 2011-12 signees:

Elias Chesire- Distance- (Eldoret, Kenya) distance star with times of 3:52, 8:17, 14:28 and 29.40 respectively in the 1500, 3k, 5k and 10k. Chesire and FAMU distance ace Shuaib Winters will look to be a formidable tandem in the MEAC.

. Niko Williams-Richey-Sprints (Detroit, Mi/South Plains Juco, TX) Multi-time All-American with best times of 10.32 and 20.77 in the 100m and 200m. He will also see duty on the 4x1 and 4x4 relays for the Rattlers.

.Steve Emere- Sprints/Jumps ( Stone Mtn,Ga/South Plains Juco,Tx) Multi-talented All-American will bring added scoring power for the Rattlers. His best times in the 110m hurdles 13.95 and 51.63 in the 400m hurdles will help FAMU to redouble their scoring efforts. Emere should also contend for the MEAC title in the Triple jump with a personal best performance of 52”10 inches. He also has pr of 21.30 in 200m.

.Elijah Owens- Sprints/Hurdles (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights HS) Nationally ranked hurdler as a junior has personal bests of 14.01, 37.31 and 53.80 in the 110HH, 300IH and 400MIHs. Owens also boasts a personal best time of 21.32 in the 200m as well and also a 46.22 anchor split on the 4 x 400m relay.

.Isaiah Smith-800/400 (Bellevue Fl/Lake Weir HS) Florida State champion and All-American comes to FAMU with personal bests of 1:52.56 and 48.40.

.D’Anthony Lewis-400m (Pensacola, Fl/Escambia HS) State runner up in 400m with personal best of 47.45.

.Dieumy Duclos- Distance (Tallahassee, Fl/Godby HS) State runner up in 3200m run. Outstanding Cross Country runner. Has personal best of 9:34 for 3200m and 4:25 for 1600m. Will add strength and depth to Cross Country program.

.Eddie Lloyd-Pole Vault- (Tallahassee, Fl/ Godby, HS) State runner up in the pole vault. He has a best height of 14’6. He will be a strong contender for the MEAC title in 2012.

.Defario Phillips- Sprints ( St. Cloud, Fl/ Osceola HS) One of Florida’s top high school sprinter’s .He should provide immediate impact to scoring efforts for Rattlers. Has personal bests of 10.62 and 21.80 for 100 and 200m.

.Robyel Kidane- Distance (Orlando, Fl/Oak Ridge HS) Very good distance runner, will add strength and depth to Cross Country team and distance group. Has personal best time of 16:17 for 5k. Placed top 25 at State Cross Country meet.
