FAMU Baseball Downs UAPB 7-3

The Florida A&M Baseball team completed their sweep of the Arkansas Pine Bluff as they defeated the Golden Lions, 7-3 in their final game of the Jackson State University Baseball tournament, here Saturday afternoon at the Robert Braddy, Sr., Field.

FAMU (2-2) punched out six hits, while UAPB (1-2) tallied five hits.

Thomas Barwick (1-0) picked up the win for the Rattlers in his first collegiate start as he struck out four and gave up one earned run in five innings of work, while Redmond Floyd took the loss for the Golden Lions, allowing two hits, three earned runs and striking out two in five innings of work.

FAMU was paced by Scott Sheplak as he went two-for-four from the plate with one RBI, while Tobi Adeyemi finished with a game high two RBIs.

UAPB was paced by Barry McDonley as he went two-for-three from the plate.

The Rattlers garnered three runs in the bottom of the first as Sheplak doubled down the left field line scoring both Reginald Grant and Adeyemi. Then Sheplak would score on a Dylan West Ground out to second, giving FAMU a 3-0 lead.

FAMU picked up two more runs in the bottom of the second as Sheplak scored on a bases loaded balk, followed by Grant single scoring Adeyemi, giving the Rattlers a 5-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, both Sheplak and Adam Decker would score on a Adeyemi single to left field, increasing FAMU’s lead to 7-0.

UAPB picked a run in the top of the fourth as Christian Matz scored on Brandon Maddox sacrifice fly to right field, cutting the Rattlers lead to 7-1.

The Golden Lions score two more runs in the top of the seventh for the 7-3 final.

FAMU will return to action as they will host Mercer University in their home opener on Wednesday, February 23 in a doubleheader at Moore-Kittles Field in a 4 p.m. start.
