FAMU Basketball Dunks Head Coach After 4 Seasons

TALLAHASSEE — Florida A&M University (FAMU) Athletic Director Derek Horne issued a letter of nonreappointment Thursday to Eugene Harris, Head Coach of Florida A&M University’s Men’s Basketball Team.

Harris has been placed on administrative leave with pay as of the close of business Thursday. His employment with the university will end on June 10, 2011.

“We have decided to move in a different direction,” said Horne. “We would like to thank Coach Harris for his effort in support of Rattler basketball.”

Harris has been at FAMU for four seasons and has amassed a record of (46-80) overall. Harris has served as head coach of the men’s basketball program since 2007.

Prior to accepting the FAMU appointment, Harris was a member of the men’s basketball staff at Georgia State University in Atlanta. He also served as coach at South Alabama (1983-1984), Clemson University (1984-1994), Auburn University (1994- 2001) and the University of Alabama (2005-2006). He also served as Assistant Athletic Director at Auburn from 2001 to 2005.

“I support Mr. Horne in his decision,” said FAMU President James H. Ammons. “We want only the best for our student athletes and our program. We believe that this change will help us to meet the goals that we have set for the program.”

According to Horne, a search committee will be appointed immediately to begin a search for a new coach.

Assistant Coach Maurice “Tony” Sheals will handle the day-to-day operations of the basketball team until a new coach is appointed.

So how does the university expect to ever get anywhr if they dont allow Coach Harris to build the program up....if you pay attention to the tams schedule,Harris had to have been bringin in money for the Uniersity playin against all of those White Colleges.! and it only made the players stronger.! A COACH CAN ONLY LEAD HIS PLAYERS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION,BUT AFTER THOSE PLAYERS STEP ONTO THE COURT, THE OUTCOME OF THE GAME IS UP TO THEM AS A TEAM.! FAMU will never get anywhr if they dont allow someone to build the program...the first few yrs were gonna be rocky anyway.! I LOVE FAMU but they are giving HBCU's a bad name with ignorant stuff like this.!

This was a bad firing. He had those kids on the right track. They were improving, and they had good gameplans. They beat the conference-winning Hampton Pirates twice, and, had his senior leader sunk a couple of free throws in the MEAC Tournament, they would have advanced and faced them again in the MEAC tournament for an opportunity to play for the conference championship. They beat the 2 best teams in the conference and played hard. Not a good decision by FAMU.

It was way past time for him to go. The man was an idiot. I say this because I experienced it first hand. Case in point, an alumnus wanted his son to attend FAMU. Came to meet Harris and brought tapes of his son playing. The idiot Harris said his son wasn't good enough to play for him,. Son signed with a major college, is starting and playing in the NCAA tournament.

I D I O T. The icing on the cake was the alumnus was not looking for a handout, he offered to pay his son's way to attend school here. But Harris said the kid wasn't good enough to play for him.
