ORANGEBURG, S.C. (Jan. 31) – The Florida A&M Women’s Basketball team picked up back-to-back road wins as they defeated South Carolina State, 79-65 here Monday evening at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
FAMU (10-10, 5-3) was paced by Tameka McKelton as she scored a game high 22 points to lead all scorers. Jasmine Grice added 13 points, followed by Antonia Bennett with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Myeshia Simms rounded out the cast of Lady Rattlers in double-figures with 10 points.
SCSU (6-12, 2-6) had a trio of Lady Bulldogs to score in double-figures as Whitney Wiley scored a team high 19 points. Tiara Knots finished with 11 points, while Fannie Goodwin finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Qiana Donald gave the Lady Rattlers a 5-3 lead on a pair of free throw with 17:07 to go in the first.
FAMU would then go on an 11-3 run to take a 16-6 lead, capped off by a Grice three pointer with 11:16 to go in the half.
The Lady Rattler extended their lead to 17 points to make the score 35-18 as Mckelton scored on a layup with 4:18 to go.
FAMU would go into the break with a 40-28 lead over SCSU.
The Lady Rattlers finished the first half shooting a blazing 47.1 percent (16-of-34), while the Lady Bulldogs shot 33.3 percent (11-of-33).
SCSU would open the second half with a 12-7 run as they cut FAMU’s lead to 47-40 on Tracey Flowers put back with 15:39 to go in the game.
The Lady Bulldogs would cut the Lady Rattlers lead to 67-61 on a pair of Wiley free throws with 4:19 to go in the game.
That would the closes that SCSU would get as FAMU went seven-of-nine from the free throw line down the stretch for the 79-65 final.
The Lady Rattlers will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 5 as they will host Morgan State at the Lawson Center in a 4 p.m. start.
