FAMU Men Fall to NCCU; Lady Rattlers Win Thriller

LADY RATTLERS RALLIES PAST NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL, 63-62

DURHAM, N.C. (Jan. 29) - Antonia Bennett made a layup as time expired to give the Florida A&M Women’s Basketball team, a 63-62 win over Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference provisional member North Carolina Central, here Saturday afternoon at McDougald –McLendon Gymnasium.

FAMU (9-10) was paced by Bennett, who scored a career high 31 points to lead all scorers. Tameka McKelton dropped in 11 points, while Qiana Donald pulled down a game high 16 rebound.

NCCU (2-18) was led by Jori Nwachukwu with a team high 21 points and four blocks, followed by Chasidy Williams with 15. J’Mia Pollock led the Lady Eagles on the board with nine rebounds.

Blair Houston scored a layup with 17:08 left in the first to give the Lady Eagles a 6-2 lead.

FAMU’s Bennett and Donald would score two quick baskets to tie the game at 6-6 at the 15:56 mark.

A pair of free throws by Houston would give the NCCU a 16-8 lead with 12:08 to go, capping a 10-2 run by the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Rattlers would respond with a run of their own as they took a 23-17 lead on a pair of McKelton free throws with 7:21 to go, capping a 15-1 run by the Lady Rattlers.

FAMU would go into the break with a 32-25 lead as the finished the first half shooting 27.9 (12-of-43), while NCCU shot 30.8 percent (8-of-26).

In a nip and tuck second half, that would see three ties and four lead changes.

The Lady Rattlers would open the second half with a 7-2 to take a 37-29 lead on a Bennett three pointer with 18:03 to go.

NCCU would use a 9-1 run to tie the game at 38-38 on Shanise Blanks three pointer with 15:09 to go.

FAMU would regain the lead on a pair of quick baskets by Bennett and Donald to take a 42-38 lead with 14:09 left.

The Lady Eagles took 51-49 lead on a Sierra Solomon three pointer with 7:29 to go in the game, by using a 12-7 run.

Bennett would tie the game at 51-51 on a layup with 7:07 left.

With 2:30 to go in the game, NCCU would take a 61-58 lead on a Pollock layup.

Bennett would knock the game at 61-61 on a three pointer at the 1:13 mark of the game.

Then NCCU’s Nwachukwu would make one of two three throws to give the Lady Eagles a 62-61 lead with 49 second left in the game.

Nwachukwu would block a McKelton field goal attempt with 23 seconds to go. Then McKelton would get a steal with 17 seconds left.

Bennett would then fire up a three pointer with three seconds left and follows her shot and lay the ball up as time expired for the 63-62 win.

The Lady Rattlers will continue their tour of the Carolinas as they will travel to Orangeburg, S.C., to take on South Carolina State, on Monday, January 31 at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center in a 5:30 p.m. start

DURHAM, N.C. (Jan 29) - Aminn Stevens through up a shot that skimmed off the backboard and fell off the rim as time expired as North Carolina Central University held on for a 61-59 win over Florida A&M, here Saturday afternoon at McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.

FAMU (7-13) was paced by Stevens with a team high 16 points, followed by Reggie Lewis with 11. Stevens led the Rattlers on the board with eight rebounds.

NCCU (10-9) was led by C.J. Wilkerson 18 points. Dijon Manns dropped I 16 points, followed by Landon Clement with 15. Manns finished the game with a team high six rebounds.

Stevens scored the Rattlers first ten points as he cut the Eagles lead to 13-10 with 14:49 to in the first.

The Eagles would take a 31-16 lead on a Nick Chasten layup with 6:03 to go in the game, capping 15-4 run.

FAMU would go into the break trailing the NCCU 41-26 as the Rattlers finished the first half shooting 40.0 percent (10-of-25), while Eagles hot 50.0 percent (16-of-32).

The Rattler would open the second half with a 14-7 run to cut the Eagles lead to 47-40 on a Christopher Walker field goal at the 13:14 mark of the second half.

Walker would score three straight baskets to spark a 9-3 run to cut the Eagles lead to 55-51 with 6:44 to in the game.

Moore would hit three pointer with 34 second remaining to cut NCCU’s lead to 61-59 for the final.
