Tallahassee, FL - Each practice this preseason, one player on the FAMU softball team recites a motivational quote. But for senior Tera Gainer, the motivation is obvious.
"Every team at the end of the day wants to win and so I feel like in the MEAC, more than any conference I've played in, they're gritty, they're down-to-the-wire, they're in it to win it," she said.
The Lady Rattlers were knocked out in the semifinals of the MEAC tournament last year, but that team, players say, didn't have the depth like they do this season.
"If one of us is not feeling well that day or we're having a bad day, we can go to the bench and pick up another playe r and they'll perform just as well as the next," senior pitcher Whitney Robinson said.
"The freshmen group that came in, the girls are just...they bring life to the team," Gainer said. "They're all extremely athletic."
That kind of athleticism will be key to their offensive game.
"Defensively we're sound. We all have each other's back," Gainer said. "But it's really going to make a difference at the plate."
FAMU opens the season on February 10th in Clermont, Florida against UT-Chattanooga and Maryland in an afternoon doubleheader.
