TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 9) - The Florida A&M University Softball team picked a pair of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference wins as they swept Norfolk State in a doubleheader, winning game one 3-1 and blanking the Spartans in game two, 8-0.
In game one, FAMU (19-18, 2-0 MEAC) tallied six hits, while NSU (7-18, 0-5 MEAC) garnered three.
The Lady Rattlers were paced by Brittany Doty and Erika Garcia as they both collected two hits from the plate, while Danielle Wright, Melina Ramirez and Morgan Boyd all finished with one hit each for the Spartans.
Jennifer Lindsey (8-8) picked up the win for FAMU as she toed the mound, allowing three hits, one earned run and striking out six in seven innings.
Casey Pomeroy (3-5) took the loss for NSU as she gave up six hits, two earned runs and striking out two in six innings.
Wright gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as she scored on a Jeanette Sauceda sacrifice fly to left field.
The Lady Rattlers bounced back in the bottom of the second inning as they scored two runs on a Spartan infielder’s error, scoring both Ashanti Shepherd and Whitney Robinson, giving FAMU a 2-1 lead.
FAMU scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth for the 3-1 final as Arianna Stewart scored on a Doty double down the right field line.
In game two, the Lady Rattlers’ bats belted out nine hits, while the Spartans punched out four.
Doty, Genesis Lopez and Garcia led FAMU from the plate as they finished with two hits each, while NSU had four Spartans to finish with one hit each.
Robinson (10-10) picked up the win for the Lady Rattlers as she pitched five scoreless inning, allowing four hits and striking out two.
Jamie Schulle (1-8) received the loss for the Spartans as she gave up seven hits, three earned runs and striking out two in three innings of work.
In the bottom of the second inning, FAMU scored three runs on three hits back-to-back-to-back as Stewart scored on a Doty single. Doty would then score on a Lopez double to left field, followed by a Garcia single to right center scoring Lopez, giving the Lady Rattlers a 3-0 lead
FAMU pushed across a run in the bottom of third inning to add to their lead as Corinne Gordon on a NSU infielder’s error, making the score 4-0 in favor of the Lady Rattlers.
The Lady Rattlers scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for 8-0 win invoking the eight-run mercy rule.
FAMU will conclude their three-game series with Norfolk State on Sunday, April 10 in a 12 p.m. start.
