FAMU Volleyball Beats SC State!

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Oct. 8) - The Florida A&M University Volleyball team picked up their second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win of the season as they defeated South Carolina state, 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-18) here Friday evening at the Alfred Lawson, Jr., Multipurpose Center and Teaching Gymnasium.

FAMU (3-11, 2-0 MEAC) finished with a game high 42 kills, while SCSU (5-17, 0-1 MEAC) tallied 36.

The Lady Rattlers were led by Maria Ceccarelli with nine kills, followed by Katherine Huanec, Ashley Johnson, Pamela Barrera and Lorin Rucker, who all finished with seven kills each. Dian Gonzalez led the team in assists with a game high 35, while Susan Egoavil finished with 11 digs.

In the first set, FAMU grabbed an 8-5 lead on an Ashley Johnson kill. SCSU tied the set at 23-23 on FAMU attack error. The Lady Rattlers would then score the next three points for the 25-23 win.

Ashley Johnson gave FAMU a 7-2 lead in the second set on a kill. SCSU would then tie the set at 11-11 as they went 9-4 run capped off by Jarne Gleaton kill.

FAMU would tie the set at 16-16 on a SCSU attack error. The Lady Bulldogs would then take a 19-16 lead on back-to-back-to-kills by Gleaton, Desire Waller and a Melissa Robinson service ace.

The Lady Rattlers retook the lead 20-19 kills by Ceccarelli, Johnson and Lorin Rucker, followed by a SCSU’s digging error.

FAMU would then go on a 5-1 run for the 25-20 win capped off by a Ceccarelli kill.

In the third and final set, Barrera gave the Lady Rattlers 17-13 lead. FAMU would then increase their lead to 20-14 capped off by Rucker kill.

SCSU and FAMU would trade the next five points as FAMU pulled a 25-18 win in the set.

SCSU had a quartet of players to finish with nine kills each in Desire Waller, Jarne Gleaton, Elizabeth Webb and Shabree Roberson. Bria Brimmer led the team in assists with 34, while Melissa Robinson finished with 10 digs.

The Lady Rattlers will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 10 as they will take on North Carolina Central at 3 p.m. in the Al Lawson Center.
