News Release: FAMU
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida A&M University (FAMU) student Richard Johnson has been named the third of five FAMU students who will receive a Tom Joyner Foundation Hercules Scholarship during the month of January.
The scholarship is being awarded in conjunction with the foundation’s School of the Month recognition program, which highlights FAMU as its January “School of the Month.”
Joyner will announce the scholarship recipients each Thursday of the month and recognized Johnson on today’s airing of the “Tom Joyner Morning Show.”
“I was surprised and ecstatic when I heard I was selected,” said Johnson, 18, a freshman nursing student from Gainesville, Fla. “I just want to thank God for granting me the opportunity to earn this scholarship.”
Johnson says his mom had a major influence on the selection of his major.
“I’ve seen her work as a nurse for more than 20 years and saw how much she helped people,” said Johnson, who cites his mother and sister as the two most influential people in his life. “I knew that was what I wanted to do.”
He believes his father instilled in him two of life’s major lessons: “never tell a lie” and “always know why you do what you are doing in life.”
Johnson is a member of FAMU’s football team. During his down time, he enjoys playing video games, working out, playing basketball and spending time with his family and friends.
“Balancing my time is a very tough task, but you have to have time management and not procrastinate,” Johnson said.
The charismatic scholar added that FAMU has taught him how to deal with adversity and overcoming obstacles.
“Historically Black Colleges and Universities, such as FAMU, are needed because they are rich in our culture, history and help us to realize how far we as African Americans have come in the world,” he said.
The Hercules Scholarship is awarded to male students who exhibit leadership skills, are active in the community and maintain at least a 3.5 GPA. Additionally, scholarship recipients must plan to embark in a career that will positively impact the quality of life of others.
As a part of the School of the Month recognition, the Tom Joyner Foundation will partner with FAMU throughout the year in a fundraiser that serves to challenge FAMU alumni and supporters to make record-breaking donations toward providing more scholarships to deserving students.
