TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Sept. 4) - In their home opener, the Florida A&M Volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (21-25, 19-25, 25-15, 18-25) to Jacksonville University, here Sunday afternoon at the Al Lawson Center.
FAMU (0-4) had three Lady Rattlers to finish with double-digit kills, as Katherine Huanec finished with a game high 15 kills, Maria Ceccarelli finished with 14, while Marija Jovanovic added 10. Diana Gonzales finished with a game 40 assists, while Karol Marquez finished with a game high 22 digs.
In the first set, the Dolphins took a 21-20 lead on an Alliya Drzewcki kill. JU would then reel of four straight points to take a 24-20 lead. A Lorrin Rucker kill would make the score 24-21 in favor of the Dolphins. Then JU would win the set on a Drezewiecki kill, for the 25-21 final.
FAMU would tie the second set at 13-13 on a Jovanovic kill. Then the Lady Rattlers would take a 16-14 lead on a Katherine Huanec kill, giving FAMU a 16-14 lead. JU would win the second set 25-19 as they went on an 11-3 run, capped off by a Loeppky kill.
In the fourth and final set, JU would take a 14-9 lead on a Taylor Nyquist kill. The Dolphins and the Lady Rattlers would battle to a 9-9 tie as JU won the final set 25-18.
The Lady Rattlers would battle back in the third set to force a fourth set as they pulled out a 25-15 win. A Ceccarelli ace would give FAMU a 9-8 lead. Then FAMU would go on an 11-7 run to win the set.
JU (5-4) was paced by Alison Loeppky with 14 kills, followed by Taylor Nyquist with 13. Kendall Courtney tallied a game high 43 assists, while Ashley August led the team in digs with 15.
The Lady Rattlers would return action on Thursday, Sept 8 as they will travel Coral Gables, Fla., to take on the University of Miami in a 6 p.m. start.
