Jacksonville Rallies Past the Rattlers, 13-8

Jacksonville, FL - Jacksonville University used a pair of five-run innings to propel themselves past the Florida A&M Baseball team as the Dolphins defeated the Rattlers, 13-8, here Saturday afternoon at Session Stadium.

FAMU (1-10) finished the contest with 15 hits as both Tyler Lawson and Aaron Smith finished with three hits each to lead the Rattlers.

JU (4-6) tallied a game high 16 hits as Dan Gulbransen finished with a team high three hits to lead the Dolphins.

Heath Blackburn started the contest for the Rattlers as he gave up nine hits, five earned runs and striking out three in three and two-third innings of work, while Tony Covington (0-1) received the loss for FAMU as he pitched one-third of a inning in relief as he faced five batters, giving up two hits and four earned runs.

Joe Ryan (1-0) was victor for the Dolphins as he pitched one inning of relief, just facing three batters, while Alex McRae got start for JU giving up nine hits, four earned runs and striking out one in two and two-third innings of work.

FAMU jumped out early on JU as Daniel Lee scored on a Cory Franklin single, followed by a Smith single to the left side scoring Scott Sheplak, giving the Rattlers a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

The Rattlers increased their lead in the top of the third as Smith doubled to center field in his at-bat and then would score on Andrew Thomas single. Then Thomas would score on a Khiry Hernandez single, followed by a Lawson single up the middle scoring both Hernandez and Dylan West, giving the Rattlers a 6-0 lead.

JU cut into the FAMU lead in the bottom of the fourth as Eathen Loosen double to center field scoring both Jake Huxatable and Chris Anderson. Then both Ethan Loosen and Garrett Ruckel would score on a Taylor Ratliff double to left field, followed by a Gulbranssn single up the middle scoring Ratlif, cutting the Rattlers lead to 6-5.

The Dolphins would then tie the game at 6-6 as Anderson scored on a Ruckel’s fielder’s choice in the bottom the fifth.

FAMU regained the lead in the top of the sixth on a Smith two-run homer, giving the Rattlers an 8-6 lead.

The Dolphins would then tie the game at 8-8 on a Adam Brett Walker two-run homer to leftfield in the bottom of the sixth.

JU would then score five runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 13-8 win.

FAMU will return to action on Tuesday, March 6 as they will host the University of North Florida at Moore Kittles Field, with the first pitch slated to be thrown at 6 p.m.
