GREENSBORO, NC (Feb.11) - The FAMU Lady Rattlers started sluggish and were never able to recover as they were handily defeated by the North Carolina A&T Lady Aggies 69-50, today at the Corbett Sports Center on the campus of NCA&T.
Head coach LeDawn Gibson felt the statistics told the story of the game, acknowledging that 20 turnovers did not help the cause. "We just didn't execute. We've been going over our offensive sets all week. They looked good in practice and just didn't bring it to the game," Gibson said.
FAMU leading scorer Jasmine Grice, again paced the Lady Rattlers with 18 points on 8-of-23 shooting from the field, including 2-of-5 from the three-point arc. Patrice Collie would be the only other Lady Rattler to score in double figures as she added 14. The team shot just 35.8-percent from the field for the game. They made just 5-of-19 from three-point range, for a 26.3-percent game average. The team was solid from the three point line going 7-of-8 for 87.5-percent.
The Aggies were paced by a trio of double-figure scorers. Eboni Ross led the way with 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field and 5-of-7 free throws. JaQuayla Berry went 5-of-12 from the field and 2-of-5 from three-point range to add 14 points. Tracy King rounded out the trio of Lady Aggies in double figures as she chipped in 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. As a team, NCA&T shot 52.9-percent for the game from the field. They also shot 41.2-percent from three-point range and 61.5-percent from the charity stripe.
"Both offensively and defensively I felt we were out of sync, and it all goes back to lack of execution. I thought we played hard, but did not execute so we didn't get the points we needed. We were also late on our defensive rotations. Combine all those factors and it's a recipe for a disappointing performance," Gibson said.
The Rattlers were dominated in the paint, allowing the Aggies to score 34 points, while only scoring 10 points themselves. The Aggies got 10 second chance points and 18 bench points. In contrast, the Lady Rattlers got not a single second chance or bench point.
The Lady Rattlers will have the rest of the week to iron out their execution as they will face the MEAC ‘s third place women's team in the Howard Bison on Sat., Feb.16 for Basketball Reunion Weekend. The game will take place at 4 p.m. in the Al Lawson Center.
