AMES, Iowa (Dec. 30) - The Florida A&M University Women’s Basketball team had four Lady Rattlers to score in double –figures as the Lady Rattlers held on for a 89-85 win over East Carolina in their final game of the Cyclone Challenge, here Thursday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum.
FAMU (5-6) was paced by Antonia Bennett as she scored a game high 24 points to lead all scorers. Tameka McKelton dropped in 22 points, followed by Christian Rateree with 16. Shekeira Copeland in her first collegiate start at FAMU finished with 10 points. Qiana Donald led the Lady Rattlers on the boards with 12 rebounds, while McKelton dished out a team high five assists.
ECU (6-7) also had a quartet of Pirates to score in double-figures with Kim Gay leading the way with a team high 20 points. Ashley Clarke finished with 13 points, while both Allison Spivey and Kelly Smith finished with 12 points each. Chareya Smith led ECU in rebounding with a team 10 boards.
Rateree gave the Lady Rattlers a 10-5 lead on a made free throw with 16:57 to go in the first.
The Pirates took a 20-18 lead on a Shala Hodges three pointer with 13:07 to go, capping a 10-0 run by ECU.
FAMU would regain the lead,30-27 on a Bennett three pointer with 8:11 to go in the first, capping off a 12-5 run by the Lady Rattlers.
The Rattlers would then extend their lead to 12 points on a Bennett jumper with 3:00 to go in the half, giving FAMU a 45-33 lead.
FAMU would go into the break with a 47-40 lead over ECU.
The Lady Rattlers finished the first half shooting a blazing 58.8 percent (20-of-34) from the field, while the Pirates shot 31.0 percent (13-of-42).
FAMU took a 56-45 lead in the second half on a McKelton three pointer with 16:50 left to go in the second, capping a 9-5 run.
The Lady Rattlers would then extend their lead to 68-54 on a pair of free throws by Rateree with 10:55 to go in the game.
ECU’s Clarke would cut FAMU’s lead to 75-72 on a layup with 5:22 to go in the game, capping a 16-7 run by the Pirates.
Clarke would connect on an another layup with 33 seconds left in the game, cutting the Lady Rattlers lead to 85-82.
FAMU would then connect on four-straight free throws to hold on for the 89-85 win.
The Lady Rattlers finished the game shooting 47.7 percent (31-of-65) from the field, while the Pirates shot 38.3 percent (31-of-81).
FAMU will return to action as they will travel to Omaha, Neb., on Sunday, Jan. 2 to take on the University of Nebraska in a 6 p.m., start.
