Lady Rattlers Edged in Overtime Home Finale

Monday, Feb. 28 – Monday’s abbreviated schedule did little to clear up the four remaining top seeds for next month’s 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament, as five teams are still in the hunt for those bye spots with the season set to end next Thursday.

Second place Morgan State (16-12, 10-5) edged past homestanding North Carolina A&T (14-13, 9-6) at the Corbett Center, 74-69, in one of three tightly contested games played Monday night.

Two games went to overtime – as visiting South Carolina State outlasted Florida A&M, 76-70, and North Carolina Central fell on the road to Bethune-Cookman, 66-60.

In the night’s fourth game, Coppin State won on the road at last place Norfolk State, 64-50.

Regular season champion Hampton University (22-6, 14-1) was idle Monday night, with just one game remaining this coming Thursday at third place co-holder Howard University (13-16, 9-6), which also took the night off.

Monday’s action left Morgan (10-5) up a full game over third place Howard and North Carolina A&T (9-6), with fifth place tied up between Florida A&M (14-14, 8-7) and Coppin State (11-16, 8-7).

Thursday night’s final slate of regular season games will settle most of the remaining questions behind #1 seed Hampton, but the matter of the Bethune-Cookman/Maryland-Eastern Shore suspended game from Feb. 14 – which has not been rescheduled – could have some affect on the final seedings for next week’s tournament.

UMES (9-18, 6-8) is in seventh place, one game ahead of eighth place Bethune-Cookman (13-14, 5-9). South Carolina State (10-16, 6-10) has completed its’ conference schedule and is in ninth place, while Delaware State (9-18, 5-10) and Norfolk State (9-17, 2-13) hold the final two spots.

@ Morgan State (10-5) closes Thursday at crosstown rival Coppin State; Howard (9-6) is at home Thursday against Hampton, while North Carolina A&T (9-6) hosts Norfolk State in Greensboro.

@ FAMU (8-7) will finish Thursday at Bethune-Cookman, while Coppin State (8-7) will welcome Morgan State Thursday to the Coppin Center.

Looking ahead to Thursday, Morgan State needs a win over Coppin State to lock up the #2 seed, which would push Coppin State to 8-8; A&T would appear to be in the driver’s seat for the #3 spot as they host last place Norfolk Thursday, while the other third place squad, Howard hosts Hampton.

FAMU, which has struggled of late, must close out with a win at B-CU to clinch at least a #5 seed, since they own the head-to-head tiebreaker over Coppin, by virtue of their 73-62 win over the Lady Eagles on Feb. 7.

Games of Thursday, March 3: Hampton at Howard; Florida A&M at Bethune-Cookman; Morgan State at Coppin State; North Carolina A&T at Norfolk State; Delaware State at Maryland-Eastern Shore; North Carolina Central at South Carolina State.
