Tallahassee, FL -- March 28, 2012 --
The Florida A&M Softball team pulled out a 5-3 win over Florida Gulf Coast in game one, but fell to the Eagles 4-1 in game two of a nonconference doubleheader, here Wednesday afternoon at the Lady Rattler Softball Complex.
FAMU (14-20) finished game one with seven hits, while FGCU tallied six.
The Lady Rattlers were led by Alyssa Weaver as she went two-for-three from the plate to lead FAMU, while Mariah Fernandez, also went two-for-three from the plate to lead the Eagles.
Jennifer Lindsey (5-6) picked up the win for the Lady Rattlers as she gave up six hits, one earned runs and striking out three in six and two-third innings on the mound, while Addie Dozier (1) got her first save the season in the one-third inning, she pitched.
Shelby Morgan received the loss for the Eagles as she gave up seven hits, four earned runs and striking out four in six innings on the mound for FGCU.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead as they scored a run in the first and third inning.
FAMU would tie the game at 2-2 as both Christina Robbs and Amanda Weaver scored on a Jasmine Donaldson single in the bottom of the third inning.
The Lady Rattlers would take the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Robbs scored on a Donaldson single, followed by a Kiefi Myrick single scoring both Alyssa Weaver and Donaldson, giving FAMU a 5-2 lead.
Fernandez would score FGCU’s final run on a Lindsey Green single up the middle in the top of the seventh inning for the 5-3 final.
Game two would prove to be a pitcher’s duel as FAMU finished with three hits, while FGCU tallied four.
FAMU would have three Lady Rattlers to finish with one hit each, while FGCU had four Eagles to finish with one hit piece.
Amanda Josie (6-3) picked the win for FGCU as she pitched seven innings, allowing three hits, and striking out three in the 24 batters she faced, while Dozier (6-9) received the loss as she gave up three earned runs, and one hit in the one inning of relief.
FAMU took the 1-0 led in the bottom of the second inning as Ashanti Shepherd scored on a Tera Gainer single up the middle.
FGCU (21-17) would tie the game at 1-1 as Fernandez scored on a Kelsey Carpenter single in the top of the fourth inning.
The Eagles would take advantage of two FAMU errors to score three runs for the 4-1 final.
FAMU will return to action this Saturday as they will open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play on Saturday, March 31 in a doubleheader against Savannah State in Savannah, Ga., at 2 p.m.
