DOVER, Del. (Jan 17) - The Florida A&M University Women’s basketball scored 43-second half points in route to 66-56 win over Delaware State University, here Monday evening at Memorial Hall.
FAMU (7-9, 3-2 MEAC) had three Lady Rattlers to finish in double-figures as Tameka McKelton scored a game high 19 points to lead all scorers. Antonia Bennett finished with a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, Jasmine Grice scored 16 points from off the bench.
DSU (5-11, 1-3 MEAC) was pace by Brittany Washington with 14 points, followed by Kianna Conner with 11. Kianna D’Oliveira rounded out the cast Lady Hornets that scored in double-figures as she finished with a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Bennett scored the Lady Rattlers first ten points of the game as they took a 10-9 lead on a layup with 12:55 to go in the first.
DSU responded with a 17-2 run to take a 26-12 lead on an Ashley Thompson field goal with 6:04 to go in the half.
The Lady Hornets would take a 36-23 lead into the break over the Lady Rattlers as Kianna Conner connected on a three pointer as time expired to end the first half.
FAMU finished the first half shooting 29.6 percent (8-of-27) from the floor, while DSU shot 41.2 percent (14-of-34).
In the second half, the Lady Rattlers turned up the defense as they converted four steals into scores to aid in a 10-2 run to cut Lady Hornets’ lead to 42-35.
A McKelton three pointer with 9:06 to go in the game would cut DSU’s lead to 49-47, capping a 12-5 run by the Lady Rattlers.
The Lady Rattlers would take a 52-51 the lead on a Qiana Donald layup with 6:43 left in the game.
DSU would be held scoreless for next seven minutes as they scored their 51st point of the game at the 9:06 mark and would not score against until the 1:26 mark on a Tasia Bristow three pointer, cutting FAMU’s lead to 61-54.
The Lady Rattlers would outscore the Lady Hornets 5-2 for the 66-56 final.
FAMU will return home to the comforts of the Alfred Lawson Center as they host Howard University on Saturday, Jan. 22 in 4 p.m. start and then will host league leading Hampton University on Monday, Jan. 24 in a 5:30 p.m. start.
