PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (Jan. 15) - The Florida A&M University Women’s Basketball scored 36 second half points, but it was not enough as Maryland Eastern Shore held on for a 64-62 win over the Lady Rattlers, here Saturday afternoon at Hytche Center.
FAMU (6-9, 2-2 MEAC) was paced by Antonia Bennett with a game high 26 points to lead all scorers, followed by Qiana Donald, who finished with a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
UMES (4-11, 1-2 MEAC) had a pair of Lady Hawks to finish in double figures as both Kwinnyata Mercer and Chelsea Sanders finished with 15 points each. Mercer led UMES in rebounds with eight boards.
Bennett scored the Lady Rattlers first three baskets of the game to give FAMU a 6-3 lead with 17:22 to go in the first.
A LaToya Buckner three pointer, followed by a Amber free throw and a Sanders three pointer gave the Lady Hawks a 10-8 lead with 10:54 to go in the first.
Donald would tie the game at 10-10 on a layup with 14:35 to go in the game.
Lady Hawks would take a 33-22 lead with 4:03 to go in the half as they went on a 11-4 run, capped off by Bria Jackson three pointer.
The Lady Rattlers finished the first half shooting 32.3 percent (10-of-31) from the floor, while the Lady Hawks shot 36.4 percent (12-of-23).
UMES opened the second half with a 9-4 run to take a 49-30 lead, capped off by a Mercer jumper with 17:19 left in the game.
The Lady Rattlers would put together a pair of runs 14-5 and 13-5 to fight their way back into the game as FAMU cut UMES’s lead to 61-57 on a Bennett layup with 6:57 to go in the game.
FAMU turned up the defense pressure as UMES scored on Casey Morton layup with 5:55 to go in the game for a 63-57 lead and would not score again until Morton connected on a free throw 14 seconds left in the game, for the 64-62 final.
The Lady Rattlers will return to action on Monday, January 17 as they will take on Delaware State in a 5:30 p.m. start at Memorial Hall in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action.
