MACON, Ga. (Feb. 26) -The Florida A&M Baseball team took one on the chin as Mercer defeated the Rattlers, 18-3 here Tuesday night at Claude Smith Field.
FAMU (0-7) was led by both Reginald Grant and Bennie Robinson as they both finished with two hits each for the Rattlers as FAMU would finish the contest with eight hits.
Mercer (7-1) pounded out 14 hits as they had five batters to finish with two hits each.
Forrest Garrett (1-0) picked up the win for the Bears as he toss five inning innings of scoreless baseball only allowing four hits and striking four in the 19 batters he faced, while William Carrasco took the loss for the Rattlers as he gave up three hits, four earned runs and striking out one in two and one-third innings on the mound for FAMU.
Mercer built an 8-0 lead into the sixth inning as they scored two runs in the first, one run in the second, two in the third and three in the fifth.
FAMU would cut Mercer’s lead to 6-3 three as they scored three runs in the top of the sixth as Jared Walker led off the inning with a triple and would then score on a Robinson single to center field. Robinson would then score on a Kelvin Singletary double to left field, followed by a Marlon Gibbs single scoring Singletary.
The Bears would score 10 run in the bottom of the sixth to invoke the 10-run mercy rule for the 18-3.
FAMU will close out their two-game series against Mercer on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at Claude Smith Field in a 4 p.m. start.
