SAVANNAH, Ga. (April 9) - Savannah State used a pair of late inning rallies to rally past the Florida A&M University Baseball as they won game one 6-5 and game two 3-2 in a doubleheader here Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field.
In the first game, the Tigers score three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning for the come from behind win.
FAMU (10-24) finished with nine hits, while SSU (19-15) finished with seven.
The Rattlers had three players to finish with two hits each in Tobi Adeyemi, Cory Franklin and David Duncan, while Matthew Nowacki finished with two hits lead the Tigers.
Kevin Herlighy picked the win for SSU as he went the distance giving up nine hits, four earned runs and striking out six in nine innings on the mound.
Stephen Dollar (2-2) received the loss for FAMU as he gave up one hits, three earned runs, and striking out one in two-thirds innings of relief.
A two-run homer by Jarryd Reid gave the Rattlers a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
FAMU increased their lead to 4-0 in the top of the second inning as both Duncan and Oscar Santalo scored on a SSU infielder’s error.
The Tigers picked up a run in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Rattlers’ lead to 4-1 as Dexter Kelly scored on a Matthew Oglesby ground out to second base,
A Nowacki single to center field scoring Peter cut FAMU’s lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Adeyemi added to the Rattlers lead in the top of the seventh inning as he homered to left field, making the score 5-2 in favor of FAMU.
Nowacki would cut into FAMU’s lead as he homered to right field, cutting the Rattlers’ lead to 5-3.
SSU would rally in their half of the ninth scoring three runs for the 6-5 win as Oglesby doubled to left field scoring Kelley and Julius Green. Then the Tigers would win the game on wild pitch scoring Antonio Scott.
In game two, the Tigers would score a run in the bottom seventh inning to rally past the Rattlers.
Once again FAMU outhit the SSU as the Rattlers belted out seven hits, while Tigers finished with six.
Reid led the Rattlers from the plate as he went two-for-two scoring one run and driving a run, while Peter Poole finished with two hits in two at-bats also scoring a run and driving in a run for the Tigers.
Kyle McGowin pick up the win for SSU allowing seven hits, two earned runs and striking out eight in seven innings on the mound for the Tigers.
Jose Linton received the loss for FAMU as he gave up six hits, two earned runs and striking out three in six and two-third inning.
After six complete innings of play the game was tied at 2-2 with both teams scoring in their half of the first and fourth inning.
Oglesby would be the hero for the Tigers once again as he singled down the right field line. Scott would once again pinch run for him. Scott would then score on a FAMU infielder’s error for the 3-2 win.
The Rattlers will return to action on Sunday, April 10 as they will conclude their three game series with Savannah State in a 12 p.m. start.
