SAVANNAH, Ga. (Feb. 18) - Savannah State completed their sweep of the Florida A&M Men’s Basketball team as the Tigers defeated the Rattlers, 76-57 here Saturday afternoon at Tiger Arena.
FAMU (7-19, 5-7 MEAC) was led by Yannick Crowder as he scored a team high 12 points, while Amin Stevens led the Rattlers on the boards with 11.
SSU (17-10, 10-2) had a pair of Tigers to score in double figures as Rashad Hassan scored a game high 23 points to lead all-scorers, while Deric Rudolph pumped in 20 for SSU. Cedric Smith led the Tigers on the boards with eight rebounds.
FAMU grabbed a 13-7 lead with 14:58 to go in the first on a Chris Watson layup.
SSU would come roaring back as they went on a 11-0 run to take a 18-13 lead on a Hassan layup with 12:04 to go in the first.
A made field goal by Reggie Lewis would cut the Tigers’ lead to 33-29 with 4:13 to go in the first.
The Rattlers would go into the break trailing the Tigers, 38-29 as they finished the first half shooting 43.3 percent (13-of-30), whereas the Tigers shot 50.0 percent (14-of-28).
In the second half, SSU would build a 51-38 lead on a Stephen Wilson layup with 14:10 to go in the game.
Crowder would cut the Tigers’ lead nine points, 53-44 on a made jumper with 11:31 remaining in the game.
That would be the closes that the Rattlers would get as the Tigers went to win 78-57.
FAMU finished the game shooting 36.4 percent (24-of-66) from the floor, while SSU shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57). The Tigers held the rebounding margin over the Rattlers, 45-37.
The Rattlers will return to action on Monday, Feb. 20 as they will travel to Orangeburg, S.C., to take on South Carolina State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match up in a 7:30 p.m. start.
