Tallahassee, FL - The Florida State University softball team hosts its first mid-week game of the season as it faces Florida A&M on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 6 p.m. at JoAnne Graf Field. The event is promoted as “Light up the Park Night,” with fans receiving free glowsticks for the nighttime contest.

The Seminoles (2-3) began their season last weekend by making a championship game appearance against Hofstra at the Seminole Kickoff Classic. FSU defeated the Pride on the second day of the tournament, 5-1, and also mercy-ruled UNC Greensboro that same day by a 13-3 score.

FSU is working on a 10-game winning streak against Florida A&M, dating back to the 2006 season. The Seminoles lead the all-time series, 98-7, and face the Rattlers in the first of two games this season. FSU makes the short cross-town trip to Florida A&M on March 23 for a 6 p.m. matchup.

Offensive progress was made in the first tournament of the season. Senior Robin Ahrberg tallied two home runs, six RBIs and finished 4-for-14 in the five games played last weekend. Freshman centerfielder Courtney Senas, a Wahiawa, Hawaii, native, led the everyday starters by going 6-for-16 with two RBIs and a double.

Right-hander Sarah Hamilton threw well in the opening weekend, allowing four runs in 22 innings pitched and striking out 30 in three games started. The Tallahassee native is six strikeouts shy of passing former pitcher and two-time All-American Leslie Malerich for sixth place on FSU’s career list.

Also making a strong season debut was senior pitcher Lauren Varsalona, who threw three shutout innings in relief. Two-way player Morgan Bullock shows an early 1-0 record after helping defeat UNC Greensboro last Saturday.

Following Tuesday’s contest, the Seminoles will host a tournament for the second straight weekend. The Garnet and Gold Tournament will be played this Friday-Sunday, with FSU hosting Kentucky, Middle Tennessee State and Georgia Southern.
