TALLAHASSE, Fla. (Feb. 25) - The FAMU Lady Rattlers (10-16, 7-6 MEAC) lost their final home game of season against South Carolina State Bulldogs (17-7, 9-4 MEAC), 61-46 at the Alfred Lawson Center on senior night.
Both teams kept it close with it being 26-23 at half in the Rattlers' favor. The Lady Bulldog player of the half was Tiarra Knotts as she had eight points, shooting 2-3 from the three-point line. The Lady Rattlers were led at the half by sharpshooter Kimberly Sparkman. She was perfect from behind the arc and totaled eleven points at the break.
During intermission, the Lady Bulldogs made adjustments and came out firing in the second half. They responded with 13 unanswered points to take a 39-26 lead over the Rattlers.
Conversely, the Rattlers came out flat, missing their first 12 shots from the field. Jasmine Grice made the first shot from the field in the second half for FAMU over eight minutes into the second half.
Coach LeDawn Gibson spoke about the team's disappointing performance. Gibson said, "I don't think we showed up to compete. We must look for other people to score and work on different things in practice. We just didn't execute."
Kimberly Sparkman agreed with the dismal effort that the team showed on the court tonight. Sparkman said, "You could tell we weren't playing to the best of our abilities. You have seen us play our best so of course we didn't come out with the energy we needed."
South Carolina State tried to let them back in the game with missed free throws. The Bulldogs only shot a little over 65-percent from the charity stripe. But, the Rattlers could not make up for the Bulldogs' mistakes by converting them to points. Grice, a team captain, had 15 points but only shot 25-percent from the field. She did not get the help she needed from her supporting cast as the Rattlers only had six bench points to the Bulldogs' 28.
The Bulldogs closed the game with a 17-0 run to end all hopes for the Lady Rattlers. Persephone "CiCi" Goodwin led the Bulldogs with 19 points. Fannie Goodwin also tallied in a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
