BOWLING GREEN, Ky. ( Dec. 12) - Western Kentucky University handed the Florida A&M University Women’s Basketball team their third loss of the season as the Lady Topper defeated the Lady Rattlers 57-50, here Sunday afternoon at E.A. Diddle Arena.
FAMU (3-3) had three Lady Rattlers to score in double-figures with Tameka McKelton leading the way with 17 points, followed by Nicole Collins, who finished with a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Antonia Bennett rounded out the cast of double-digit scorers with 14 points, while Myeshia Simms dished out a team high seven assists.
WKU (3-6) was led by LaTeira Owens, who finished with a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Amy McNear led the Lady Toppers in assists with a game high 10.
The Lady Toppers opened the first half with a 12-7 lead as Owens made a layup with 16:40 to go in the first.
FAMU would rattle off six straight points to take a 13-12 lead on a pair of McKelton free throws with 14:32 to go in the first.
The Lady Toppers would then go on a 12-2 run as they took a 27-18 lead on a Keisha Mosley field goal with 7:35 to go.
FAMU closed out the first half with an 8-2 run, capped off by a Collin’s layup with 10 second left in the half.
The Lady Rattlers would trail the Lady Toppers 29-26 at the break.
FAMU finished the first half shooting 33.3 percent (10-of-30) from the field, while WKU shot 38.7 percent (12-of-31).
A Bennett three pointer with 11:13 to go in the second half cut WKU’s lead to 39-38.
The Lady Toppers would extend their lead to 10 points 53-43 on a pair of Jasmine Johnson free throws with 4:54 to go in the game, capping a 10-5 run.
FAMU would outscore the WKU 7-4 in the remaining four minutes as the Lady Topper held on for the 57-50 win.
The Lady Rattlers will return to action on December 19 and December 20 as they will travel to Long Beach, Calif., to participate in the Long Beach Tournament. FAMU will take on Long Beach State Sunday, Dec. 19 at 5 p.m., then will take on North Carolina State on Monday, Dec. 20 at 8 p.m.
