Greenville, SC - Florida State women’s tennis season began today (9-24) with mixed results at the Furman Fall Classic in Greenville, South Carolina. Senior Katie Rybakova and sophomore Noemie Scharle bounced back from an 8-6 early morning loss to North Carolina’s duo Shinann Featherson and Lauren McHale to soundly defeat South Carolina’s Anya Morgina and Miki Jocic 8-1.
In their first ever collegiate doubles match together, senior Federica Suess and freshman Manon Veldman began their day with success as they defeated Furman’s Michele Stanford and Jenny Porter 9-7. The Seminole duo would later fall 8-2 to Northwestern’s Elena Chernyakova and Natalie Edell in round two.
In singles Scharle defeated Furman’s Margaret Boyette 6-3, 6-1, but Rybakova was defeated Tennessee’s Brynn Boren 0-6, 6-2, 7-5, Suess lost to Vanderbilt’s Lauren Mira 6-3, 6-2 and Veldman fell 6-0, 6-0 to Clemson’s Maria Belaya.
The Seminoles will return to courts tomorrow with doubles play starting at 9:00am. The teams will play two rounds of singles tomorrow due to predicted rain on Sunday.
