Tallahassee, FL -- The Florida State softball team entered the ACC tournament as underdogs and left Mewen Field as champions.
"You have to peak at the right time and you talk to the team all the time about staying there, don't get frusturated, keep working hard, keep working hard," says FSU head softball coach Lonni Alameda. "Sometimes as a coach you have to keep talking like that but the kids really bought in and the kids really worked hard and different people stepped up at different times."
FSU began play as a bubble team for the NCAA tournament, knowing their only way to guarantee a spot with the final 64 would be to win the ACC title.
"The team said we are the story, we are going to make this happen. Don't let them take it away from us because we left it in their hands," Alameda adds. "If you let other Cinderella stories come through other tournaments then it takes away other opportunities for at large. Not until last night when we were watching the selection show and UNC wasn't chosen did I know that that win got us in and I don't think we would have made it there otherwise."
With the 4-1 win over North Carolina the 'Noles captured their eleventh conference title in school history and will travel to Athens, Georgia to play in the regional round for a school record twelfth straight year. Where they will be joined by the University of Georgia, UAB, and Georgia State.
