Tallahassee, FL - Florida State’s Nick Crowell, an assistant coach for the men’s tennis team, has been named the USTA Florida Junior Coach of the Year. This summer Crowell coached the Florida USTA Junior U18 team that went on to win the National Team Championship. Crowell will be honored at the 61st USTA Florida Annual Meeting and Tennis Celebration on Dec. 4.
“Winning this award for me was a great honor,” said Crowell. “In coaching the team I felt like I was in the right place at the right time. The junior team hasn’t won since 1983 so just to be a part of that was very special.”
“USTA Florida every year gives out a junior competitive coach of the year and this season Nick Crowell won the award,” said Andy Gladstone, Competitive Tennis Coordinator for USTA Florida. “It’s a very prestigious award with a long list of great coaches who have won the award. I could just tell his passion for his kids and how well he could not just pick up on their games but on their personalities and attitudes.”
This summer the Florida USTA Junior U18 team won 4-3 to beat the No. 3 seed Midwest after upsetting the No. 1 seed Southern California 4-3. Crowell has coached the team for the past three years.
“He took the Florida Boys 18s National Team to the University of Illinois for the team championships and won it,” continued Gladstone. “They called it one of the greatest upsets in 25 years. He took good players and got them to believe they were better than they were. They played unbelievable there.”
Not only has Crowell coached the USTA Junior team and the Florida State men’s tennis team he is also the high performance director of the Florida State tennis camps. This past season, the Seminoles went to the NCAA tournament for the eighth consecutive season.
