Greensboro, N.C.- After the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in June, the Florida State Diving team went back to work in order to prepare for this week’s AT&T National Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatics Center in Greensboro, N.C.
Three divers not only qualified for the contest, but made the finals in three different events on Wednesday and Thursday.
“I’m so proud of the ladies,” head diving coach Patrick Jeffrey said. “They’ve trained well over the summer and it’s really paying off at this meet.”
Rising junior Katrina Young led the way on the women’s 10-meter platform event by qualifying for Saturday’s final round in fourth place with a score of 327.70, just under 11 points from the top spot.
Young’s classmate, Kelsey Goodman, took seventh in her first-ever national final on the 1-meter springboard with a score of 248.00. Goodman was in action on Thursday on the 3-meter springboard where she qualified for Sunday’s final in the 10th spot with a score of 262.70.
Joining Goodman in the 3-meter springboard final will be rising senior Ariel Rittenhouse, who was 12th in the semifinal round with a 251.10. This will be the first time that she has made the national final in the event since 2008. Rittenhouse placed 10th on the 1-meter springboard earlier this week.
“Very proud of both of them, “Jeffrey said. “ Both Kelsey and Ariel dove great in prelims, but they could have made it easier on themselves in the semifinals. They were just a little nervous because it was a big day for both of them and they came through. We’re all very excited for a three of these ladies to dive in the finals of their events.”
The top 12 divers in both the 10-meter platform and 3-meter springboard advanced to the final round. In addition, all of the previous scores will erase. Young is scheduled on Saturday in the last event of the session which begins at 12 p.m. Goodman and Rittenhouse will dive on Sunday, following the finals of two synchronized events which will start at 1 p.m. All information in regards to the meet can be found at usadiving.org.
