COMMENTS FROM QB Coach Randy Sanders, LB/Special Teams Coach Charles Kelly

Quarterbacks Coach Randy Sanders

On how the QB’s are looking:

“In a lot of ways it’s fun to have a quarterback competition, at the same time it’s kind fun to have the guy you know is going to be the starter so he can get most of the first group reps and you can start building some continuity. When I became the quarterback coach, the first thing my wife asked me was ‘Do they have a returning starter’. It seems like through 15 years of coaching quarterbacks, or whatever, 16 years now seems like half of them we’ve been trying to figure out who the starter’s gonna be. It’s fun to watch the guys compete. It’s fun to watch them learn. I am excited about the abilities they do have. Who it is or when it happens, they will determine that. They’ll determine that by how they play. How productive they are. How well the team moves when they’re in there. How many points we score. When it happens, how it happens is up to them.”

On his influence on the offense considering his experience as a play caller:

“You just look at the people Jimbo hired on this staff. I have never been on a staff that has this much experience calling plays or calling defenses. I think that speaks highly of him, his security in what he’s doing and the fact he wants input from everyone. The offense isn’t going to change. It’s Coach Fisher’s offense. He’s also told me a number of times he wants input and it’s my job to provide input and not get my feelings hurt if we don’t do it, to keep providing my ideas because you need ideas. Somebody has to make the decision on whether you implement them or not but everyone needs to put in ideas.”

Linebacker/Special Teams Coach Charles Kelly

On his transition to Florida State:

“It’s been a good transition. I got here in the middle of recruiting, got right to work. Really focused on that that and getting to know the players here. I think that’s one of the reasons why they’ve been so successful is because they build relationships. They do it in recruiting and they’ve done it with the players, so I’m just trying to get to know the guys. Getting into a new defensive system, which they’re familiar with what Coach Pruitt has done and working with the special teams. That’s something I enjoyed when I did it early in my career at Georgia Tech. it’s been fun working with those guys. I really enjoy this group of players- the linebackers we have. Right now I am still in the evaluation process of a lot of those guys. The one thing I can tell you is they came out and have a good work ethic and they work really hard.”

On the relationship with defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt:

“I’ve known Jeremy for a long time, actually back when he was a player. Even then I kept up with his career. We would talk. When I was at Tech a lot of the things we did were with the secondary. A lot of it was very similar. I’m familiar with the language that he speaks. I’ve always been really impressed with him. He’s just one of those guys. You know he had it. He’s very smart and very confident in what he does. He has a passion for what he does. I really look forward to working with him and it’s going well so far.”
