FSU Practice Report: Fisher Calls Senior Class ‘Tremendous Group’
Senior cornerback Lamarcus Joyner is one of five finalists for the Nagurski Trophy

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 2-ranked Florida State football team will honor 24 seniors prior to Saturday’s 3:30 p.m. matchup with Idaho at Doak Campbell Stadium.

In his comments following Thursday’s practice, fourth-year head coach Jimbo Fisher called the senior class that came in with him “tremendous” and said the magnitude of Saturday being the group’s final home game is already starting to sink in.

“It’s kind of sinking in and that group is so special,” Fisher said. “There’s so many influential guys in our program’s history and what it meant and what it let us get to and how they’ve influenced the other guys in the organization. There’s some guys that I’ll never forget in that class. This is a tremendous group.”

The Seminoles will look to win their 13th consecutive game and finish undefeated (7-0) at home for the first time since 2000.

Highlighted by fullback Chad Abram, safety Terrence Brooks, linebackers Christian Jones and Telvin Smith, cornerback Lamarcus Joyner and wide receiver Kenny Shaw, Florida State’s four-year senior class brings an impressive 41-10 record (.804 winning percentage) into its final game on Bobby Bowden Field. The Noles’ eight fifth-year seniors bring a 48-16 (.750) mark into the contest.

Joyner Named Bronko Nagurski Trophy Finalist
On Thursday, senior cornerback Lamarcus Joyner was named one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, an award given annually to college football's most outstanding defensive player.
This is the second year in a row that a `Noles defender has been recognized as a Nagurski finalist. Bjoern Werner was a 2012 finalist a season ago before being selected in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts.
Chosen by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) All-America Committee, Joyner will now attend the Charlotte Touchdown Club's Dec. 9 banquet at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, N.C. Joyner will be joined by fellow finalists Darqueze Dennard (Michigan State linebacker), Aaron Donald (Pittsburgh defensive tackle), C.J. Mosley (Alabama linebacker) and Michael Sam (Missouri defensive end).
The winner will be announced on the night of Dec. 9 and the ceremony will then be aired on the NFL Network Dec. 14 at 5:30 p.m.
Joyner, who is also a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Jim Thorpe Award, enters his final game at Doak Campbell Stadium Saturday with a team-high five sacks -- a large number considering the Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. native plays in the defensive secondary. In fact, no other defensive back in college football has more sacks than Joyner this season.
Joyner is also second on the team in tackles with 51 total stops and has 6 1/2 tackles for loss. He has one interception, three pass breakups, four passes defended, two quarterback hurries and at team-best three forced fumbles.

Jimbo Fisher Post Practice Quotes – Nov. 20, 2013

Opening Statement:
“(A) very good Thursday. Guys executed extremely well. (It was) one of the best weeks of practice we’ve had. Guys are being very professional about how they’re going to practice and remembering why we’re having success. They’ve done a great job. Like I said, (we) can carry it over to the field on Saturday. Guys have done a good job of that and we’ll have to continue to see and hopefully we’ll play another good ball game. I really liked the week of practice. I really liked today. Guys were locked in and focused well and were sharp in the meetings.”

On redshirt freshman backup quarterback Sean Maguire and his progress this week:
“I really like it – the two-minute offense, the things he’s doing in practice (and) consistency. He made some really nice throws today. A couple times I looked back I said ‘man who was that throwing? Was that Jameis (Winston) or was that him?’ I mean, just throwing the ball, understanding where to go with it, blitz pick-ups and reads. Again, he’s been getting reps all year, but just going out there and executing it. I’m going to tell you now, Sean can go out there and throw that football. He’s got a very good arm and he moves around very well.”

On if he’s planning to give Maguire more reps with the first team:
“No. It will be the same. We have to play each game by ear. If we’re playing well and we’re ahead we may try to do some things but if not, we’ve got to win the ball game. We’ve got to do what we’ve got to do.”

On how confident he is putting Maguire into the game:
“Oh I feel very comfortable. Until you go out there and do it, you have to do it. But the way he’s practiced and the way he’s prepared and the ability that he has and the guys we have around him I feel very confident.”

On this Saturday’s ‘Senior Day’ sinking in:
“It has for me. It’s kind of sinking in and that group is so special. There’s so many – characters is not the word, I don’t mean it that way, just influential guys in our program’s history and what it meant and what it let us get to and how they’ve influenced the other guys in the organization. There’s some guys that I’ll never forget in that class. This is a tremendous group.”
