Tallahassee, FL - Florida State provost Dr. Garnett Stokes opened the meeting by announcing "the search is wide open."

The search committee for the athletic director met for the first time on Thursday afternoon at the Westcott building. They hope to have an athletic director in place by the start of the fall semester.

"I'll be honest with you, that's what President Barron said, he'd like to get it done by fall," said Andy Haggard, one of the committee members, "and I didn't see how we can really do that until I've listened to Mr. Turner. And after listening to him obviously I think we can get it done."

The committee is composed of 10 stakeholders, Stokes, President Eric Barron and Todd Turner. Barron did not make Thursday's meeting.

Turner is the head of Collegiate Sports Associates LLC. based out of North Carolina. FSU hired the firm to lead the search in finding their next athletic director.

The firm has helped Clemson and Nevada pick their athletic directors.

Turner received feedback from the committee profiling the ideal candidate.

"I'm very impressed with [Turner]." Haggard said. "He's been an athletic director himself which is pretty incredible to me. He's heading up the selection committee. I'm very happy with him, everything he said he was looking for."

Stokes told the committee that their job is to figure out what type of candidate they're looking for and create a pool of candidates that will be exceptional.

One of the qualities that the committee agreed on in selecting their next athletic director is that he or she must possess great communication and social skills.

They committee talked about other qualities such as character, integrity, commitment to excellence in athletics and academics and passion.

"I think what was crucial is that the committee had an opportunity to really explain to the individual who is helping us with the search what they're looking for in an athletic director," said Stokes, who is in her second year as provost.

Elizabeth Ichite was the lone athlete representative. She surveyed some members of the Garnet and Gold athletics teams. Many of them hope the next AD is similar to former AD Randy Spetman.

"A lot of similar characteristics," Ichite said. "Someone who can connect with the athletes on all different levels. On a personal level as well. Puts our academics first and pretty much treats every sport equally, not just the bigger sports."

Turner ended the meeting by saying he has several people in mind for the job and he has spoken to a few of them already. But, he did that before acquiring the feedback from the committee. And now that he has the necessary information he can proceed to develop an advertisement. He hopes to have that prepared by early next week.
