Tallahassee - The No. 6 Florida State Seminoles (46-6, 23-3 ACC) took both games of Saturday’s doubleheader against Georgia Tech (23-22, 11-16 ACC) on JoAnne Graf Field. FSU defeated the Yellow Jackets 5-1 in game one and 4-0 in game two.

“A great job today by this team of staying focused and executing the game plan against a solid Georgia Tech team,” said head coach Lonni Alameda. “We weren’t always able to get things going on offense, but our pitching and defense kept us in it and when we had our opportunities to capitalize, we took them. Two big wins today and we want to send our seniors out with another one tomorrow.”

FSU scored two runs in the bottom of the second of game one on a double to right center by Celeste Gomez to drive in Bailey Schinella who singled to center and Bella D’Errico who pinch-ran for Alex Powers after she drew a four-pitch walk.

The Noles added another run in the third inning after Victoria East ripped a triple to the right field corner and came in to score a batter latter on a sac fly to left by Schinella.

Georgia Tech plated a run in the fourth on an infield single by Katie Johnsky to score Ashley Rudnik who had reached on a walk earlier in the inning. The Jackets failed to hit a ball out of the infield until the top of the sixth inning when Samantha Pierannunzi hit a double to right center with one out.

Tiffani Brown extended FSU’s lead to 5-1 in the sixth with shot that screamed past the second baseman and went all the way to the wall in right center for a triple, scoring Victoria Daddis and Alex Kossoff.

Lacey Waldrop wrapped up the rest of the game with little issues, allowing only four hits over 7.0 innings in the complete-game victory. She recorded nine strikeouts and allowed four walks and one run to improve to 30-4 on the season. Waldrop is the first Seminole pitcher to post 30 wins in a season since Tiffany McDonald in 2006.

Maddie O’Brien’s streak of reaching base ended at 50 games as she went 0-for-4 in game one.

Game two was a pitcher’s duel between FSU’s Jessica Burroughs and Georgia Tech’s Kanani Cabrales with each scattering just two hits apiece over the first five innings.

No runner for either team reached third base until the bottom of the sixth when Florida State broke the game open as Brown and Senas each drove one-out base hits to center. O’Brien loaded the bases on a fielder’s choice to short when Ashley Thomas unsuccessfully tried to force out Brown at third.

A passed ball by GT’s Alysha Rudnik allowed Brown to score and give Florida State a 1-0 lead. Later in the at bat, Kelly Hensley dropped a double into shallow right where the second baseman nor the right fielder could get to, driving in two runs. An RBI groundout by East rounded out the scoring for the Seminoles and made it 4-0 after six full innings.

Burroughs pitched a stellar game and closed out the Georgia Tech seventh with a strikeout to end the game and improve to 16-1 on the season. The reigning ACC Pitcher of the Week finished with eight strikeouts and allowed just two hits and a walk in a complete game shutout of the Yellow Jackets. It is the third time in her last four starts where she has recorded eight or more strikeouts.

The Seminoles wrap up the series and the 2014 regular season with a game on Sun., April 27 at 12:00 p.m. We will be celebrating Senior Day prior to the game to honor five seniors – Celeste Gomez, Tiffani Brown, Courtney Senas, Kelly Hensley and Jessica Nori – who have given so much to this program.
