Tallahassee, Fla. -- Florida State freshman Matilda Castren, who won the individual title and led the Seminoles to a third place finish at the Florida State Match-Up, was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Golfer of the Month for February.
Castren (Espoo, Finland) won the first individual championship of her career at the Florida State Match-Up, finishing a career-best 10 under par. The first-year Seminole set personal records for single round scores with a 68 in both the first and second rounds. Her three-round tournament score (206) and number of strokes under par (10) were also personal bests.
For the month, Castren stood 11 strokes under par in five rounds played and scored at or below par on four of those five rounds. Her highest single-round score in her two January tournaments was an even par 72. She led the Seminoles to a second-place team finish at Florida Challenge, where she tied for a second-place individual finish. The Seminoles placed third at the Florida State Match-Up behind Castren’s first career individual championship.
Castren is Florida State's leading golfer this year with a 71.57 stroke average in 14 rounds during seven events. She has carded seven rounds at par or better and all 14 of her single round totals have been scored at 75 or below.
Castren has earned four top-10 finishes (first at the Florida State Match-Up, tied for second at the Florida Challenge, tied for eighth at the University of Oklahoma Schooner Fall Classic and tied for eighth at the Lady Paladin Invitational) and four top 15 finishes in the first four events of her career.
Castren has a cumulative stroke total of even par in the first five events of her career. She was a total of 11 over par in the first three events of her career and is a total of 11 strokes under par in three most recent events of the season.
Castren has been Florida State's leading golfer in four of the first five events of her career.
The Seminoles continue their fall schedule as they travel to play at the Lady Gator Invitational March 14-16 at the Mark Bostic Golf Course at the University of Florida.
The Seminoles play host to the NCAA East Regional Championship May 8-10, 2014 at Southwood Golf Club in Tallahassee.
