TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Defending ACC Champion Florida State will face Tulsa in the 19th Annual MetroPCS Orange Bowl Basketball Classic on December 29 at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla. The Seminoles will face the Golden Hurricane in the first game of the doubleheader, followed by Florida and Air Force in the second game. Game times will be announced at a later date.
The Seminoles’ game against Tulsa will precede the second game of the doubleheader which will match Florida and Air Force. The classic is a one-day, one-game event for each of the four teams. Florida State will play in the Orange Bowl Classic for the fourth time with its most recent appearance coming in a 74-60 win over Nebraska on Dec. 31, 2005.
Florida State enters the 2012-13 season as the defending ACC Champions. The Seminoles defeated North Carolina, Duke and Miami to win their first ACC Tournament title after finishing with a school record tying 12-4 record in ACC play in 2012. Florida State returns four of their top five scorers from last season, including leading scorer and All-American candidate Michael Snaer (14.0 ppg) and third leading scorer Ian Miller (10.3 ppg). Led by Head Coach Leonard Hamilton, Florida State finished last season with a 25-10 record as Hamilton was named ACC Coach of the Year for a second time in the past four seasons.
Florida State’s game against Tulsa will mark the fourth meeting -- and first since the second round of the Cabrillo Classic in 1982 – between the two teams. The Seminoles have a 3-0 record against the Golden Hurricane in the series that dates back to 1963. Tulsa is a member of Conference USA and finished in third place with a 10-6 record in league play.
Tulsa is led by first time head coach Danny Manning. One of college basketball’s all-time greats, Manning was named head coach on March 29, 2012 after spending the last nine seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Kansas. He was part of two national championship teams at Kansas, leading the Jayhawks to the 1987-88 championship as the National Player of the Year, and assisting Head Coach Bill Self with the 2007-08 national champions. Tulsa finished last season with a 17-14 record and is making its MetroPCS Orange Bowl Basketball Classic debut. The Hurricane return their second leading scorer in Scottie Haralson (11.1 ppg) and leading rebounder in Kodi Maduka (8.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg).
