AUBURN, Ala. (Seminoles.com) – The No. 15 Florida State women’s basketball team was just seconds away from its second straight trip to the Sweet 16.
But a putback by Georgia (23-10) and subsequent free throw with under three seconds to play dashed those hopes and the Seminoles fell to the Bulldogs, 61-59, Tuesday night in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Auburn, Ala.
FSU (24-8) had a 59-58 lead with just 10 seconds left. But after the team thought they heard an official’s whistle and paused, Jasmine Thomas putback a missed shot and was fouled.
With just 2.9 seconds left, the Seminoles couldn’t push the ball up court in time in shoot a potential last-second 3-pointer for the win.
Cierra Bravard once again starred for the ’Noles as she continued her 21-game double-digit-scoring streak. She scored 19 points to go with her 10 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season.
Playing in her final game as a Seminole, Courtney Ward added 12 points and Alexa Deluzio had 10. Chasity Clayton and Natasha Howard combined for 18 rebounds.
The Seminoles had 19 turnovers and the Bulldogs turned those giveaways into 26 points. On the flipside, Florida State had just five points off Georgia’s 12 turnovers.
FSU built a 51-41 in the second half before Georgia answered with a 7-0 run. Up 51-48 with just under six minutes to play, Bravard drew the foul and sank two free throws to halt the FSU scoring drought.
The Bulldogs answered and took a 55-53 lead with 3:38 left to play. By the time there was just two minutes on the game clock, the Seminoles were down 58-57 after a UGA 3-pointer and some Bravard free throws.
Bravard then went 1-of-2 at the charity stripe to tie the game at 58-58 before she stole the basketball on the defensive end.
With 34 seconds left, Deluzio was fouled chasing down a rebound and made one of her two free-throw attempts.
On the opposite end, it appeared as though Bravard was fouled after grabbing a Georgia miss but instead the officials ruled it a jump ball and the possession arrow favored a Bulldogs team that would then get its putback win.
Florida State trailed 9-2 early on but erased that deficit with an 8-0 run. The ’Noles boasted a 33-27 lead at halftime.
