The future of the Florida State defensive coaching staff looks a whole lot clearer. Alabama defensive backs coach Jeremy Pruitt is the ‘Nole’s new Defensive Coordinator. Joining Pruitt's staff is Sal Sunseri. The former Tennessee Defensive Coordinator will coach the defensive ends.
"It's huge, we got our defensive coordinator a guy we wanted very good coach very knowledgeable, great recruiter," Florida State Head Coach Jimbo Fisher said.
Pruitt, just 38 brings with him a lot of football experience. Fisher first met Pruitt on a recruiting trip. Fisher was at LSU, Pruitt then the head coach at Hoover High School in Alabama. Pruitt's been on Fisher's radar ever since.
"His knowledge of the game, his experience of how he’s handled some things and when he gets on the board, answers to the spread things, had great success against the open teams from all those guys to Malzahn in that league and the way they've played and done those things, had a great rapport and no doubt he's ready to be a coordinator and think he'll be a very good one," Fisher said.
For the last 6 years, Pruitt has been learning under Alabama's Nick Saban as the Tides defensive backs coach. That experience and success was another reason to bring Pruitt aboard.
"We'll keep parts of our defense and then add to what we got and Alabama brings a lot more different things to the table," Fisher said.
Fisher and Saban are friends, but joked about stealing Pruitt away.
"Ahh Nicks mad, they offered him a bunch of money to stay, to stay there as a position guy. We go to these battles, these are enemy battles. I mean he and i are very good friends and are very close but he’s happy for Jeremy because it’s an opportunity," Fisher said
Pruitt isn't the only coach hire. Sal Sunseri is now the new defensive ends.
"Another great recruiter, another great guy that’s coached in the NFL, tons of first round picks linebackers and defensive end," Fisher said.
Their relationship goes back a long ways.
"I used to coach his son in camp for many years, a quarterback, got to develop him early, Tino and we coached together at LSU during those times, we've been friends for a long time," Fisher said.
