Tallahassee, FL - Christian Hunnicutt has made a collegiate career out of quietly going about her business and doing the important little things to help make her teammates and the Florida State women’s basketball program better.
Wednesday afternoon, her accomplishments were recognized in a not-so-quiet way when Atlantic Coast Conference officials announced that Hunnicutt is this season’s ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
Selected by the league’s 12 women’s basketball coaches, the Jonesboro, Ga. native is the very first Seminole in women’s basketball history to achieve the honor.
Wednesday’s announcement takes place after a 2010-11 regular season that saw Hunnicutt post statistical career highs in virtually every category. But for everything she did in all facets of the game, it was her defense that helped propel FSU to a No. 3 seed in the ACC Tournament and top-15 national ranking.
As Florida State’s top perimeter defender, Hunnicutt has started all but one game for the Seminoles, in which she sat out due to a sprained knee.
The 5-foot-10 guard owns a 3.8 assist/turnover ratio, which is a mark good for eighth among ACC players, and has held her defensive assignments in ACC wins to a remarkable 18-for-84 shooting.
“This award is particularly special because of who it is for,” FSU head coach Semrau said. “Christian has worked her tail off four years in a row without getting much credit. She understands what we are trying to accomplish defensively and she has the ability to not just go out there and do it but to help communicate it to her teammates and get them properly organized no matter what the situation is. We asked her to take on the most important role of her career this season and she did not disappoint.
“We are so proud of her for this accomplishment.”
Hunnicutt is the fourth FSU player in school history to make the All-ACC Defensive Team, joining two-time winners Brooke Wyckoff (2000, 2001), Alicia Gladden (2005, 2006) and Jacinta Monroe (2009, 2010)
