TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State head football coach Jimbo Fisher announced the hiring of Bill Miller as linebackers coach on Friday.
“I’m very excited to have Bill Miller as part of our staff,” Fisher said. “Bill brings a wealth of knowledge and experience having served both as a position coach and a coordinator. He’s also a tremendous recruiter and has knowledge of the state of Florida when it comes to recruiting. He’s coached at Miami and at Florida. He knows this state and is at home here. He’s a great addition to our staff.”
Miller comes to the Seminoles from Minnesota, where he was the assistant head coach and linebackers coach since 2011. Miller also served as the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State (1989-94), Miami (1995-98), Michigan State (1999-2002) and Arizona State (2005-06), and was the associate head coach at Florida (2003-04).
The hiring of Miller completes Fisher’s staff for the 2014 season. Following the departure of defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, linebackers coach and special teams coordinator Charles Kelly was promoted to defensive coordinator in the offseason. Kelly will also coach defensive backs.
Miller brings 36 years of collegiate coaching experience to FSU. He helped lead Minnesota to back-to-back bowl appearances in 2012 and 2013 and an 8-5 record this past season. In 2013, the Golden Gophers allowed only 289 points – the first time Minnesota allowed less than 300 points since 2004.
Miller has twice been named a semifinalist for the Broyles Award, given to the nation’s top assistant coach, while at Michigan State (2000) and Florida (2003). He has coached teams that went to 13 bowl games and been on staffs that have won five conference championships.
Before Minnesota, Miller coached linebackers and was co-defensive coordinator at Kansas in 2009 and linebackers coach at Louisville in 2008. Miller was also defensive coordinator at Western Michigan in 2007.
As the defensive coordinator at Arizona State from 2005-06, Miller helped take the Sun Devils from last in the Pac-10 in total defense to second in just one year.
During his time as defensive coordinator at Michigan State from 1999-2002, Miller led the Spartans to the No. 1 defense in the Big Ten in 1999.
Miller, who graduated from Texas-Arlington in 1978, began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater in 1978 and filled the same role at Oklahoma State from 1979-80. His first full-time position was as the defensive backs coach at Drake from 1981-82.
Miller and his wife Lisa, have two grown children, Cole and Jackson.
