TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – The No. 3-ranked and No. 8-seeded Florida State Seminoles (51-6) earned their first win of the 2014 NCAA Tournament with a 6-1 win over Fordham (36-19) on May 16 on JoAnne Graf Field at the Seminole Softball Complex.
“A good game for us to get under our belt,” said head coach Lonni Alameda. “We knew that Fordham was going to come out and swing the bats a bit and Lacey did a great job of keeping them off balance and attacking the plate. It was a good team win. We got a lot of offense and played some great defense behind Lacey. Good day today and we are excited to get on to tomorrow.”
Senior Courtney Senas didn’t waste any time to show her athleticism as she stole an extra base hit away from Fordham’s Amy Van Hoven with a great leaping catch in left center in the top of the first.
The Seminole bats got hot early in the game as back-to-back singles by Senas and Maddie O’Brien sparked a three-run first inning with RBIs by Kelly Hensley, Victoria East and Bailey Schinella.
Lacey Waldrop was nearly perfect in the circle, retiring the first eight batters she faced before Fordham was able to get a base hit on a bunt to third by Cora Ianiro. That would be the only base runner that the Rams would be able to muster against Waldrop before she was relieved by Jessica Burroughs in the top of the sixth.
Waldrop (34-4) ended the game with 5.0 scoreless innings pitched, allowing just one hit and recording seven strikeouts without allowing a walk. The Chester, Va., native hasn’t surrendered a walk in her last 14.0 innings over three games.
The Florida State offense provided more than enough for Waldrop as the Seminoles added runs in the third and fourth inning. East came into score from second in the third inning after an extended rundown following a fielder’s choice by Schinella.
Two runs came in during the fourth inning after Alex Powers and Tiffani Brown notched base hits early in the frame. An RBI single from Senas and an RBI sac fly from O’Brien pushed the Seminole lead out to 6-0 after four innings.
Brown tied a season high with three hits, knocking a double down the left field line in the second and adding singles in the fourth and sixth. It is the first time she has three hits in a game since February 14 against Southern Miss.
Fordham starter Michele Daubman (18-11) allowed four runs on five hits over 3.0 innings in the loss.
Fordham was able to plate a run in the top of the seventh off of Burroughs after leading off the inning with a single behind the circle by Van Hoven and a double off the wall in left by Elise Fortier. A passed ball by Celeste Gomez gave the Rams their only run of the game.
Burroughs closed out the game with 2.0 innings pitched, allowing two hits, one run while striking out four.
