TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Former Florida State All-American pitcher Luke Weaver was honored with the Rawlings Gold Glove Award for his outstanding defensive performance throughout the 2014 season. The award is voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Weaver was perfect in 26 defensive chances on the mound, finishing with 19 assists and seven putouts. He helped turn three double plays, caught one runner stealing and picked off two runners.
Weaver ended the season with a 2.62 ERA and an 8-4 record over 16 starts. He allowed opponents to hit just .226 against him and threw two complete games, marking the first Seminole with multiple complete games in a season since Sean Gilmartin in 2009.
Florida State has now collected four Gold Gloves since the awards inception in 2007. Weaver joins an elite group of past Seminoles to win the Gold Glove Award including Buster Posey (C, 2008); Tyler Holt (OF, 2009); and Sherman Johnson (3B, 2012). FSU’s four all-time winners are tied with Creighton, UC Irvine and Kentucky for the most Gold Gloves by a school in the eight-year history of the award.
The DeLand, Fla., native was previously honored this season as a first team All-ACC selection and a third team All-American by Collegiate Baseball.
Weaver was drafted earlier this month in the first round (27th overall) of the MLB First Year Player Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. He became the 21st Seminole taken in the first round of the draft, six of which have been taken by the Cardinals, most recently James Ramsey in 2012.
