Florida State vs. Ohio State Game Notes

Florida State, which has defeated 12 nationally ranked teams at home under head coach Leonard Hamilton, plays host to No. 2 ranked Ohio State on Tuesday, Nov. 30, at 7:30 p.m. at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee.

The game is part of the 12th annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge and is the second consecutive season the Seminoles and the Buckeyes have met in the challenge which has been largely dominated by the ACC.

The ACC has won 10 of the first 11 challenge events with the Big Ten taking its only conference victory by a 6-5 margin in 2009. Florida State enters Tuesday’s game against Ohio State with a perfect 5-0 record in challenge games at home in Tallahassee with wins over Minnesota in 2000, Iowa in 2002, Minnesota in 2004, Purdue in 2005 and Minnesota in 2007.

The Seminoles are 5-3 in eight challenge games under head coach Leonard Hamilton. The Seminoles enter their game against the Buckeyes with a 5-1 record after winning their first five games of the season. Following Tuesday night’s game against Ohio State,

Florida State will play host to Hartford on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 7:00 p.m. before opening conference play at home on Dec. 12 at Clemson.

FLORIDA STATE’S SUCCESS AGAINST RANKED TEAMS

Florida State has defeated 12 ranked teams – including No. 1 ranked Duke (March 1, 2006), No. 3 ranked Wake Forest (Jan. 18, 2005) and No. 4 Florida (Dec. 3, 2006) – at home in the Donald L. Tucker Center under head coach Leonard Hamilton. The Seminoles most recently defeated a top 2 ranked team with a win over No. 1 ranked North Carolina (Feb. 14. 2009) in the semifinals of the 2009 ACC Tournament – a win that advanced Florida State to the championship game of the tournament for the first time in school history. Most recently, the Seminoles defeated two nationally ranked Georgia Tech teams last season to run the Seminoles’ consecutive season streak of defeating a ranked team to 21 consecutive years.

THE NUMBERS ON CHRIS SINGLETON

Junior All-American candidate Chris Singleton enters Tuesday’s game against Ohio State as the only player in the ACC to rank among the top 10 players for steals (first, 3.2 spg), blocked shots (tied for third, 2.8 bpg), rebounding (fourth, 10.0 rpg), scoring (tied for sixth, 16.2 ppg), and field goal percentage (eighth, .476).

THE SINGLETON CAMPAIGN

Junior forward Chris Singleton is an All-American candidate and a candidate for the Wooden and Naismith Awards as the nation’s top player, the top candidate for the Henry Iba Award as the nation’s top defender, an All-ACC candidate and the top candidate to win the ACC Defensive Player of the Year award for the second consecutive season.

LOOK FOR FLORIDA STATE TO…

…Defeat No. 2/2 Ohio State and defeat a top five ranked team at home for the sixth time under head coach Leonard Hamilton. The Seminoles most recently defeated No. 1 ranked North Carolina in the semifinals of the 2009 ACC Tournament;

…Defeat No. 2/2 Ohio State and gain its first win over Ohio State. The Seminoles and Buckeyes have met five times with Ohio State winning all five games;

…Defeat No. 2/2 Ohio State and gain a win over a ranked Big Ten team for the first time since Dec. 26, 1974 when the Seminoles defeated then No. 15 ranked Purdue, 69-66.

FLORIDA STATE IN THE ACC/BIG TEN CHALLENGE

The Florida State men's basketball team, which finished in third place in the ACC standings and ranked as high as 18th in the Associated Press during the 2009-10 season, will play host to Ohio State on Tuesday, Nov. 30 in the 2010 ACC/Big Ten Challenge. It marks the second consecutive year the Seminoles and the Buckeyes will meet and the second time in the 12-year history of the challenge the two teams will play in the challenge. The Seminoles have a 6-5 record and have helped the ACC win 10 of the first 11 challenges. The Seminoles' game against the Buckeyes will mark the fifth between the two teams with the last coming last season on Dec. 2, 2009.

FLORIDA STATE UNDER LEONARD HAMILTON IN THE CHALLENGE

The Seminoles are 5-3 under head coach Leonard Hamilton in seven challenge appearances since the 2002-03 season. Hamilton has guided the Seminoles to wins over Iowa (in 2002), Northwestern (in 2003), Minnesota (in 2004 and 2007) and Purdue (in 2005) since his arrival in Tallahassee. Hamilton guided Florida State to four consecutive victories in his first four seasons in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge before the Seminoles fell at Wisconsin during the 2006 ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Seminoles lost at Ohio State in the 2009 ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

FLORIDA STATE VS. RANKED TEAMS

Florida State enters it game against No. 2/2 Ohio State in the 2009 ACC/Big Ten Challenge with 17 wins over nationally ranked opponents during the first nine years of the Leonard Hamilton era in Tallahassee. Included in those 17 wins by Hamilton-coached teams are victories over No. 1 ranked Duke (79-74, March 1, 2006) and No. 1 ranked North Carolina (73-70 in the ACC Tournament Semifinals, March 19, 2009).

DEFEATING HIGHLY RANKED TEAMS AT HOME

Florida State has defeated the nation’s No. 1 ranked team three times in school history with two coming under head coach Leonard Hamilton. The Seminoles defeated No. 1 ranked Duke (March 1, 2006) and No. 1 North Carolina (March 14, 2009) for two of the programs wins over No. 1 ranked teams. Florida State defeated No. 1 ranked Duke (Jan. 6, 2002) under then head coach Steve Robinson for the first win in school history over the nation’s No. 1 ranked team.

FLORIDA STATE AGAINST NO. 2 RANKED TEAMS

Florida State has defeated the nation’s No. 2 ranked team once in school history. The Seminoles upended No. 2 ranked North Carolina in the national semifinals on March 22, 1972. The Seminoles’ win over the Tar Heels sent Florida State to its first ever national championship game appearance against UCLA. The Bruins defeated Florida State, 81-76, on their home court of Pauley Pavilion to win the NCAA championship.
