Jenije Stars As FSU Track Team Opens Indoor Season Friday Night

Tallahassee, FL - Highlighted by Michelle Jenije’s performance in the triple jump, the Florida State men’s and women’s track teams (men – No. 6/women – No. 14 opened the 2011 indoor season Friday night at the Virginia Tech Invitational.

“The coaches are pleased after day one here at Virginia Tech,” FSU associate head coach Harlis Meaders said. “It was obvious that this was our first meet but for this early in the season our kids on the whole did well.”

Jenije especially.

She finished as the top collegiate athlete in the triple jump. Her 12.52m distance was second only to FSU grad Alcye Williams’ mark of 12.6m. The Seminoles’ Latera Davis finished the triple jump in seventh place with a jump 11.95m.

In the unseeded section of the women’s pole vault, Lauren Giffin tied for second place with a distance 3.65m.

As for the track performers, Marecia Pemberton paced the ’Noles with a second place finish in the 60m semifinal thanks to a time of 7.41. Teona Rodgers then finished in fifth with a time of 7.63 that was enough to qualify and Danielle Jeffery also advanced with a 7.64 mark.

On the men’s side, Gonzalo Barroilhet and newcomer Tremaine Grant made the finals of the 60m hurdles. Grant improved his personal record to 8.10 on a fourth-place finish and Barroilhet’s 8.21 mark was enough for seventh place.

“That was a great race Grant’s first meet for FSU,” Meaders said.

Jumping from short approach, Barroilhet completed his day with a second-place finish in the unseeded section of the pole vault. His distance totaled 4.90m.

After winning his heat, Kevin Williams’ time of 34.31 seconds placed him 3rd overall in the men’s 300m run.
