College Park, MD - The No.20-ranked Florida State women’s tennis team defeated Maryland 6-1 , moving to 12-5 (4-3 ACC).

“I'm really proud of how the girls redeemed themselves today,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “I was most proud of how each of them approached the day with their attitudes.”

The Seminoles captured the doubles point behind a pair of convincing wins on courts one and two. Senior Francesca Segarelli and Kristina Schleich defeated Vronni Van Berlo and Sarah Gealer on court one by a score of 8-4.

Sophomore Daneika Borthwick and junior Kerrie Cartwright teamed up to defeat a Terrapin family pair of Nataliya and Olga Bredikhina, 8-3 on court two.

With the 1-0 edge, the Seminoles showed their dominance in singles by winning five of six first sets.

Segarelli (No. 109) put FSU ahead 2-0, after handling Gealer on court two, 6-1, 6-0. Segarelli is 21-10 in singles on the season.

While playing on court four, Cartwright earned her ninth win of her career against Gaistrick in dominating fashion, 6-1, 6-0.

Clinching the win for the Seminoles was Sargeant, as she delivered a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Olga Bredikhina on court three. With that win, Sargeant moves to 24-5 on the season.

The Terrapins got on the board after Borthwick (No. 31) fell to Van Berlo, 7-5, 6-4 on court one, making the score 4-1.

Florida State won the final two matches in play as Schleich defeated Nataliya Bredikhina on court five 6-1, 6-2, adding the fifth point.

Making her spring debut, junior Laurence Porry earned a three-set win over Stodowski on court six. Porry got out to a controlling, 6-3 first set win, before falling in a tight 7-5 second. Porry recharged for the tiebreak, taking it 10-6. Porry is 2-2 in singles for the year after closing out the dual for the ‘Noles 6-1.

“How great for Laurence to jump in to the line up and get her first win of the spring,” Hyde said. “She stepped up big in the third set and literally took the match from her opponent. It was awesome to see her deliver in that situation and get the job done.”
The Seminoles were able to bounce back from an upsetting, 4-2 loss at Boston College on Friday.

“We hit a small bump in the road on Friday,” Hyde said. “Today, this team responded very well to that loss. They came out and dominated the match from start to finish. This sport will always provide so many opportunities for lessons to be learned, and there's no doubt that this is team is better now than we were before the loss on Friday. It was a wakeup call, and it got our attention, and this team is better for it.”

Florida State returns to Tallahassee for two final home matches of the season against Duke and North Carolina. The Seminoles will host the sixth-ranked Blue Devils at 4 p.m. on Friday at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The match will be the ‘Paint it Pink’ event for the ‘Noles.

The final match at home will be against the top-ranked Tar Heels on Sunday at 12 p.m. The Seminoles will honor their two seniors, Sargeant and Segarelli.
