ATLANTA, Ga. (seminoles.com) – Senior pitcher Lauren Varsalona and fellow senior catcher/first baseman Jen Lapicki represented the Florida State University softball team on the Capital One Academic All-District Second Team, announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Both players represent District No. 3, which is mainly comprised of Division I universities from Florida, Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Lapicki has an impressive 3.66 cumulative grade point average as a sport management major, while Varsalona shows a 3.37 GPA as a double major in finance and applied economics.
Lapicki has garnered several academic honors in the past – she was a Third Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American and an all-district IV first team pick in 2009. She was also a member of the National Fastpitch Association Scholar-Athlete Team, a 2010 ACC Academic Honor Roll and Academic Team member, a multiple Dean’s List recipient and a Golden Key National Honor Society member.
Following the playing season, Lapicki looks to continue her education by attending graduate school for sport management at FSU.
Varsalona has undergone the difficult task of taking two difficult majors. The Knoxville, Tenn., native has been steady both in the classroom and on the field. The right-handed pitcher is a two-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member since transferring to FSU in the fall 2008.
In her junior season, Varsalona finished with a 1.34 ERA in 15.2 innings of work as a primary reliever, appearing in 14 contests. As a sophomore, she appeared in a relief role a team high 18 times, striking out more than a batter per inning with 31 strikeouts in 28 innings pitched. As a senior, she has made 11 appearances and shows a 2.74 ERA.
